Greetings to everybody,
If I only come here when I have a problem, this it means that the rest of the time I'm happy enough:-), But since I got the ultra pack+, if Real Band an Power Tr. are working well, why with BiB do I have always problems about ins and outs with Vista? Actually, if I want to listen my midi music and record an audio on it, I have to use Edirol in In, and Sound Blaster X FI in Out. Then if I want to listen them togheter, I don't have audio sound. The audio is recorded in his track and the VUmeter is reacting on it, but no audio sounds from the H.speakers. To listen the audio, I have to change from mme to asio. Then if I have to correct something, I have to go back and spend time to reput mme. I also have to say that frequently I receive error messages if for example I open the VUmeter and sometimes the program crashes or the audio is deleted if I want to stop while I'm listening. I'm really exausted about Vista. It is looking like a super hammer to beat on your fingers instead of the nail. Other examples: After I closed BiB, I receive a message that an error occoured and BiB has to close! It was working so well with XP ! Unfortunately my new Dell XPS was sold with Vista and it's looking to much complicated to install XP now that Vista is in it. So, finally, I have to use my ultra pack+ 2008.5 with my old PC which it is not a real pleasure as it works too slow. Is there any one who has an idea to help me to use this nice program without having problems with drivers? . Thank you.

As you'd already know, Vista doesn't let programs write anything to the disk without permission. The easiest solution is to turn off the User Account Control (UAC); doing this will stop the permission seeking aspect of Vista. I'd imagine that that is what's causing the error message. UAC is located under Control Panel >> User Accounts. Also, when I change between ASIO and MME, I have found that I need to shut BIAB down and restart for the change to work properly.
Are you using Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?

Thank you very much for the advices. In fact I'm on 64. I didn't know that it was possible to change. I'm going to modify this and turn off the account. I hope it will be better. Thank s again.

Commiserations Blisco, you have more or less the same setup as I do. Most of my early problems were with the X-Fi soundcard. Which one do you have? I hope not X-Fi Xtreme Audio, which really is not an X-Fi card, although they do at least have a Vista driver for it now. I gave up on it and replaced it with the Xtreme Gamer. Make sure you are using the latest driver from Creative - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi series driver 2.18.0013 for my Xtreme Gamer - although they have been promising an update forever to cure some outstanding problems. Here is the list of Vista driver availabilities: http://support.creative.com/KB/showarticle.aspx?sid=14186&h=13If you are into realtracks and why wouldn't you be, I recommend the Forte DXi. I don't think anything else is functional. Jazzman helped me through most of my problems but he has more confidence in Creative than I do. Yes, you have to turn off the User Account control but I am not sure that 32-bit compatibility mode is necessary. And one should not have to, anyway! My system is operating well these days but I think I am going to raid the piggy bank and get Windows 7.

Blisco,
As far as I'm aware, Edirol doesn't work on 64 bit operating systems. There has been much discussion in these forums about Vista 64 bits. Before I bought my latest computer, I researched 32 bit versus 64 bit operating systems and discovered that there are many programs out there that can run fine on Vista 32 bit but not 64 bit. That decided me on getting Vista 32.
If you search in these forums for Vista 64 bit, I'm sure you'll find some valuable reading.
Regards, Noel

Hi Blisco,
As most new Vista computers we deal with have either the X-Fi Audio or RealTek sound cards it is likely that you have the X-Fi Audio version
Whilst this works it is limited in operation and is meant for audio play back and not Audio creation and would recommend the X-Fi Xtreme gamer card for maximun benefit from your BIAB output (we have installed over 700 without problems and the secret is the correct and full installation of the drivers as with all driver packages)
For your current problem -
1. Get the latest Creative X-Fi Vista 64 driver update - the chances are that yours could be out of date
2. Open the Creative Volume Panel and ensure that everything is set correctly on both - Playback - and - Record - panels and nothing is muted
3. Make sure that the choice for Recorder is "What U Hear"
4. Buy from PG Music the Coyote Forte softsynth which works with Vista 64 to fill the gaps not possible with the excellent RealTracks etc
5. As this was a new computer did it come with a free upgrade to Windows 7 which is far superior and smaller that the Vista version
Noel is quite right that computers with different combinations of devices and programs cause strange problems

This is the key right here Blisco. You have to learn just for self defense if nothing else what version of an OS works with certain devices that work with what programs. Music production like what we discuss here is not the normal operation of a PC. A very small percentage of PC sales are for this kind of thing. Sometimes you get lucky by simply buying a brand name right off the shelf and everything works fine but many times that's not the case. I'm not a super geek or anything but I've learned enough in the last 6 or 7 years or so to know that I need to keep building my own systems with my own hand picked parts. My current P4 2.8 is about 4 years old and I carefully picked out everything and then ordered the stuff from Newegg. Everything is important to music production from the power supply, the type and brand name memory, hard drive manufacturer, maybe not so much the CPU. But as you've already read, which version of an OS to go with what audio interface and DAW is really critical. Some people have good luck with Creative products but imho you're better off with something a bit more suited for music production. It's not so much the basic audio quality, the Creative cards sound fine, it's more about a much more flexible software suite, a bit better quality in the hardware, things like that. Considering those Creative cards are well over $100 you can get something by Edirol, EMU or Tascam that's specifically designed for what we do and not gaming for just a little bit more. I will probably make the jump to Win 7 next year but trust me, I will haunt various forums first and figure out just what works with what.

Hi Bob,
I have had my current DAW, built around an AMD 64 processor for nearly 4 years and will be looking to upgrade next year. In the time I have been involved in computer music, I have had four machines two of which were especially built and have given good service. Two machines were bought off the shelf and needed extra bits and pieces added, but more importantly both needed repair and replacement too often during their lifetimes. My current DAW had the good bits from my previous DAW installed such as the Video Card, three hard drives, keyboard, monitor and mouse from my previous DAW. All I have had to replace to date is the Monitor and the Power Supply, the latter under the Warrenty. Sadly, the Computer Shop I used has changed hands so I may well need to look elsewhere.

Thank you very much for all your advices. I think I'm going to pass on Window 7 too but first I'm going to see about the driver. Many thanks again. It's a pleasure to know that this forum exist.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
