Off course I firstly install BiaB on my main studio computer... but can I also use it (as a kind of 2nd license) as an installation on a mobile hard drive, to be used with a laptop while traveling?

This is a good question, and often asked.
My understanding is that you are allowed up to three licensed installations on your own computers. This allows you to install on a main system, and e.g. a laptop that you can use independently. That is what I do and PG Music allows this.
I don't think it is licensed to a 'mobile hard drive' per se, but to a second computer system (i.e. a laptop).

I'm guessing you don't mean that literally, that is, if I bought BIAB one year, then upgraded for 2 years, that I would have NINE activations.
I would still just have 3 activations for the current upgraded install.
Is that correct?

As I understand it, youur previous activations are still taken, unless you de-activate them before installing the new version over the old version (there's a different serial number each year, so each serial number gets tied to the computer to which it is installed.
So yes, you potentially could have nine activations if you installed 2018, then upgraded to 2019, then upgraded to 2020, but didn't de-activate any.

I thought about qualifying what I wrote, in case someone thought the activations were cumulative, but I hoped no one would think that. I don't know for certain, but since the activations are tied to a particular computer and a serial number that changes each year, I would think, No, they will not add up.
What I think it all means is that you could have three activations for BIAB 2018, three for 2019, and three for 2020. That does not mean nine for 2020.

Whenever you upgrade, you receive a new serial number. But because you have upgraded, the previous version is replaced/written over. The previous serial number won't work with the new (upgraded) version.
On the other hand, if you purchase a full version each time instead of upgrading, well then you have purchased additional license(s).

Good point. But I can’t imagine why anyone would do that (buy full new versions each year).

Also it seems that if you save the complete C:/bb directory to to an external drive before you upgrade, you can keep the three available previous versions (for whatever nefarious purpose you wanted them) as well as the three new versions. Not that I would ever do that. This works because BIAB is not written to the registry.

The registration process does phone home to PGMusic, so that's where the count is kept. That's why you'll fail on the 4th activation. If you have a good reason (hard drive fail, upgraded computer, etc.) PGMusic can reset your activation count by contacting them.
