Hopefully one of the DAW plugin experts can help here.

When I select a MIDI style, I see that the master track gets generated as an audio track, and on the right side of the interface where the RealCharts are for RealTracks, it has generated individual audio tracks for the respective MIDI tracks.

My question is, which synth was used to generate those tracks and is it possible to select something different? Is it using the default synth BIAB uses, or Windows internal sounds, or something else?

Thanks, and I hope to learn something new today.

I think it just uses the default like Sforzando.
You can generate the Midi only without Audio then put a vsti on the DAW track then solo the midi track in the plugin you want to try.
If you have a few different midi instruments then put sends on that track sending the channel to another track with another instrument or load all your vsti's on the same track but different channels.

If it uses Sforzando, how does it know which instruments to load?

I can do a video, if that helps explain it.

I just don't see anywhere to set a synth to use in the plugin (but then again, I'm just now starting to work with it and probably need a lot of help). I am trainable. LOL.

should have the tgs that a MST will use, if it's just a midi it might just use the default synth ?

I find it kind of amusing grin that after all this time we (me included) do not really know the answer to this question. I once tried to sus it out but something must have stopped me... I believe this is a pretty good indication regarding how many folks are actually using this feature. However, I do hope someone can definitively answer this at some point.

Just did some testing but not exhaustive yet

it is NOT the default synth - and its not picking it up from the .tgs files either.

I just set my default synths in both 32-bit and 64-bit BIAB (just to ensure each .tgs and each program had a different and NON-GM synth) to big boomy analog synths - you know Blade Runner, Terminator, .. stuff)

And the piano and other instruments sound like what they are suppose to be but not all that good. I think maybe the render is using the generic wavetable?

But I need to do more playing around - but what we really need is for PG to answer this - directly.

Nice work Larry ...quote ..but what we really need is for PG to answer this - directly.

I am really amazed ,astounded as to the fact, This forum has a long history of those long time guys Like your self and others,

But if this was Sony, Steinberg forums Etc, they would have to give an answer under pure pressure as forum members would ask directly.

Being relatively new , why not here ?.

Am I missing something ?.

You have to understand the history of the BIAB VST. It has been a rocky road which has resulted in a lot of folks keeping their distance as features are added and bugs are fixed. In fact, the first version did not even handle midi and was only focused on Real Tracks. So MIDI is kind of new with version 2.

Due to these issues, only those who want to live on the cutting edge have ventured into the water, and the fact is that is not many. It would be great to have more folks working with this. However, if you join, be sure to strap in, it will likely be a rough ride. crazy

Just an FYI

I don't use the BIAB VSTi and really had/have zero plans to do so in the future, this just looked like an interesting academic exercise smile

Indeed an interesting question.

So far I didn't care as I intended to render MIDI from the DAW. The only exception would be instruments I have no synth for. Then it would be handy if the plugin would use the best default synth it has (hi-q with Sforzando).

No argument

This plugin should have allowed the ability to set the synth for EACH track independently or all via the default.

Which reminds me I need to check it MAY be using the hi-q/Sforzando - after this live stream I'm watching I'll have to test that as well

This is old but it just shows how to send the midi to whatever VI you like Video: Playback Audio/MIDI Tracks from Plugin. It gets away from rendering the midi to wav for each generation and having a lot of hard drive space taken up by wavs as Mario explained, this way you can listen to the midi thru the VI of your choice, if you are not happy with that you just regenerate that midi track in the plugin.

Again just an exercise to see what the default is that plugin is using. To answers John's original question: I'm now 99.99% certain the synth the BIAB VST uses is the MS GS wavetable.

Just did a few side by sides using same BIAB MIDI only styles (rock, jazz, gospel, blues, etc.) in both 64-bit BIAB and 64-bit Mixcraft 9 Pro with the BIAB VST3.

BIAB proper was using the MS GS wavetable as default synth aka "CoyoteWT" and the the tracks from BAIB were identical sounding with those generated in the BIAB VST3 within Mixcraft.

Anyone can repeat and audibly convince themselves, of course PG could have jumped in here and answered right away - LOL

Again I have zero use for this plugin, but current actual USERS should request that the plugin allow user assignable synths by track and/or by default.

Sure, the plugin should support all the synth settings of BiaB (song, instrument, bar, wherever).

Someone (not me - I don't use it) that uses the BIAB VSTi should put that "desirement" on the WISH LIST if they want that feature and it is not already in the wish list.

I think you might be right, Larry, but it's probably the Microsoft GM/GS by way of Coyote WT (since the GM/GS doesn't directly render, and I would think that if PGMusic had a way to render it themselves, they wouldn't need to provide Coyote WT to do so).

BBW4 would have to be using whatever BBW is using I would imagine.
I don't worry too much about it as I drag just the midi into the DAW and don't have need for the wavs that the plugin can render, that's the good thing about midi.

It really is more a question to understand how it works, in that whether you use the audio from MIDI or not, it still generates it. But there does not seem to be a setting for that, hence my curiosity as to what source was used to generate the audio.

Maybe Adar or one of the other PGMusic folks could chime in here.
