Hi all,
Just wanted to share how amazed I am at the quality and price of online music lessons. So many websites have the most incredible musicians really teaching and breaking down how to play particular songs note for note, how to solo, how to understand and apply theory.
The first I discovered - from someone on here actually (forgive me if you're name isn't popping into my head) was Truefire.com. After that I joined Guitar Instructor.com and Artistworks....again, simply amazed.
If you're an absolute beginner there are physical aspects to playing the instrument that have to take place in person...but once your technique is adequate, there's no limit to what you can learn online for basically nothing compared to paying for live one-on-one lessons....this is of course both wonderful and sad at the same time - kind of like what DJ's did to the live music industry.
I have recently been looking at jamplay....now I'm a professional music student and a lesson junkie as opposed to an actual artistic musician and songwriter, so these lessons are right up my alley.
Wondering how everyone else feels about what's available today compared to 20 or 30 years ago. Accurate books go back for quite a few years, but the video brought a whole new level of utility to learning online, IMHO.

Hi Joe,
All I can say is that I wish I had the resources that are available today back when I was learning how to play the guitar. I couldn't find a guitar teacher so I had to learn on my own, but luckily I did play trumpet so I had a head start on learning to read.
There are a ton of lessons out there so I would advise people to take advantage of them. However it is still the best policy to get a good instructor first. It is easier to learn the right way first then to correct bad habits later.
My momma didn't raise a fool. And if she did it, was one of my brothers.

Just today guitar lessons given by Keith Urban began to show up on my YouTube feed. I've posted a link in the Woodshedding forum.

(my name isn't THAT hard to remember ) Truefire has a sale going on through the month of April that includes a number of $5 downloads. Any one of them is well worth 5 bucks. They are very well done instruction videos. The selection this time is fairly limited, but if you find something you like, it's worth it. They are rotating 2 different sets - every other day. Their bigger sales (Black Friday and Christmas, for example) have a much bigger selection (of $5 downloads). https://truefire.com/(go to the Egg Hunt page for the $5 downloads)

If there's a song you want to learn on any instrument, you can find multiple videos on it there for free.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I'm not surprised at all. I used several of the Homespun lessons before "online" even existed.
Top notch musicians breaking down playing techniques and songs.
Extremely helpful.

Mario,

I did that pretty early on. The guy gave me a list of the books to get and I would always study beforehand. After about the third or fourth lesson, he told me proceed on my own since I already could play what the next lesson was before I got there.
It did teach me to learn to read enough to be dangerous and inspired me to get into music theory. Music theory was much more helpful than learning to read.
