May I ask this question?

When I generate the RealTracks and insert them into my DAW, the files sound rather thin and quiet.

Is it because you will always need to add effects like Reverb, EQ, compression, etc before the RealTracks can sound good?

My sincere thanks,

Are the Realtracks being generated in BIAB and then transferred to your DAW or are you using the VST plugin (or maybe even Realband)?

Band-in-a-Box RealTracks are unmastered audio and are generally quieter than a normal WAV file ripped from a CD or bought from a music store.

If you need a higher audio level for your WAV files, you can experiment with throwing a peak limiter on your master track to boost all the volumes. You can also investigate the process of Mastering, which includes raising the levels of a track to that which you'd hear on a CD.

Here's a link to an excellent article on Mastering, written by iZotope:

imagine they were processed and loud, then when you try to match them up in a song project to other source materials it might be difficult

Everyone has a different idea of how much reverb and other processing seems right, so working with flat & dry tracks works for all. You can make some of these adjustments in BIAB but if your goal is to bring the tracks into a DAW, it is probably better to do the adjustments there.

Hi, in this case, I was using the VST plugin inside the DAW.

Are you using the unprocessed (direct) tracks?

Thanks,
Paul

I suspect that the poster was referring to dry tracks, in other words, not passing the track through any effects, such as reverb, etc to get the audio output for your further processing.

Hi again,

Make sure that you have 'Normalize Renders' activated -- as shown on the image below (#3). Also, deactivate the flat, dry, center options (#4). If your group of items labelled #4 have check marks like in the image, please remove them.

This should help.

Regards,
Noel

Hi Allan,

Firstly, the display is not how the preferences appear in my DAW (Reaper). They're much more spread out in the DAW.

What I did with this was to capture the screen after clicking on "File". I then pasted this into the graphics editor PicPick which has a free version for home use.

Next I opened preferences and then captured that screen and pasted it in a second tab in PicPick.

I then used Windows snipping tool to capture just the preferences information and I pasted it over the first image.

Lastly, I used Windows snipping tool to grab the bit of the image that I wanted to keep.

The above sounds complicated but it's not really. And it doesn't take that long to assemble.

I hope this covers what you wanted to know!

All the best in the covid times!
Noel

Noel,

Thanks for sharing the PicPick graphic editor link and taking time to share your editing process. At less than 15 MB it is a lightweight program, isn't it.

I've been using the free graphic program, +++ Irfanview +++, since sometime in the mid nineties. It has some awesome capabilities at converting image file formats.

It looks like many of the simple image tasks I perform are quicker and easier in PicPick so I downloaded it and will play with it some.
