I use a cheap pop filter, but I still have plosives. Thinking of getting a Stedman. It's $70. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I worked on my own diction and mic technique to help reduce this problem. I don't use a pop screen/filter but I do have one on hand for others. I do use a low cut filter though.
Does the noise in your head bother me ?

In the meantime, you could try and EQ it, add a 100 Hz to the high pass filter. It could help (has for me in the past).
Cheers, Deryk

I use a cheap pop filter, but I still have plosives. Thinking of getting a Stedman. It's $70. Any thoughts? Thanks. One thing you can try: position your vocal mic so that it is not pointing directly at your mouth. Placing a mic at the level of your nose or your chin can add just enough of an offset that the plosive is not blasting the mic capsule directly. Add to that a slight angle on the mic and you have another option. You can also do this type of thing while singing by moving your head position on troublesome words. Think of the game of pool--it's all about angles. If you change the angle just a little bit, that blast from a 'b' or 'p' is not directed into the mic. ...but you have yo remember to do it every time

Using a pop filter is just a part of the solution. It doesn't negate the need for mic technique.
I use a pop filter as SOP.... but I also use mic techniques. I find that backing off on the powerful notes and singing past the mic are the best ways to prevent problems.
By "singing past the mic" I simple mean.... Imagine a straight line from your mouth going straight out. Now, place the mic at approximately 45 degrees off that line on either side. The effect is that all the plosives will miss the mic and you will only get the clean audio. All the polsive really is is simply the puff of air that hits the windscreen. Put it off axis and that is no longer an issue. 45 degrees is just a suggestion. Could actually be more, even up to 90. Sibilence is an overload of the high frequencies and distance is your friend with that.
When we perform live, we tend to eat the mic. However, in a studio, with a condenser mic, you can easily have the mic at a distance and get great audio. Pop filter and a foot or more is common. Singer sings into the pop filter and life is good.
I have used the old cheap embroidery hoop and nylon stocking.... still have it around here somewhere..... and I have used a decent looking and slightly pricier "official" pop filter and to be totally honest, they both appear and sound to work equally well.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

PLOSIVES don't really get fixed by a pop screen. The cheap & easy fix is to secure a pencil across the face of your mic. This will "split" the aggressive sound and it won't rattle the diaphragm as much. Slightly harder is to learn to sing those sounds over or to the side of the mic. The most effective solution is post recording...using volume automation, (preferably preFX), to reduce the level of the recorded plosive. If you use Reaper there's a Youtube vid on just how to do the automation - it works equally well for essing too.
