I have a song identified in the key of F#, but the chords show up as Gb. Is there a way to respell the enharmonic chords??? Thanks!

Welcome. You play flugelhorn? That's my main instrument.
Yours is a frequently asked question. My first inquiry: did you set the key signature, or leave it as the default of C? If it's still C, then try setting it to F#. Click on the C key signature, and use the second column, so the pitches in your current song do not change.
BIAB uses the key signature for many decisions. This is a quick response, to see if we can get you going. THere are other things to try but let us know about this first question.

Hey Matt, amazingly, just yesterday I picked up my flugelhorn after not playing it for a few years. Felt great... and also ouch! (It's a Kanstul... {rip}.)
The song is set to the key of F#. I tried to "toggle" the keys between F# and Gb and back with no observable change. The Gb's and Db's never blinked.
Thanks so much for responding!

Ok, I have another idea when I get back to my computer. It’s possible to change the enharmonic designations of notes, and maybe I can make it work for chords.
If the Kanstul site is still up, you’ll see me there as an endorser of the 1525.

I just tried working in F# and my system takes it. It also can flip correctly between F# and Gb in the key signature.
I do remember something about this. The next question is, what version of BIAB do you have, and have you updated to the latest build? You can find out what you have in Help, About BIAB.

Flugelboy, also Welcome.
Could you advise if this is BiaB 2020 for Windows or Mac? Not sure if it makes a difference, but it might.

I was looking for BIAB Mac... OK, not sure about the Mac system, but hopefully, some of the mac users will be able to verify and give great guidance.

Hi Matt!! BIG CLUE (perhaps!!) I had a "middle of the night" idea: Start a totally new file in the key of F# and type in an f# chord. Result: Gb THEN I changed the key to C Result: F# I went through all the keys (key change only, no transpose) and found certain keys that respelled the enharmonics properly and other that didn't. The key changes that changed my F# chord to a Db were these: Db, E, Gb, Ab, B, C#, F#,and G#. Hmmmm.
Is this maybe a bug that I should report?
Very Thanks Again from Marty (off to practice my flugel again)

I wrote a reply, but it seems to be lost... ohhhhhhhhh. I started a new song in the key of C and entered an F# chord. Result: F# stayed F# Changed the key (no transpose) to F# Result F# changed to Gb
Started over and tried changing to every key (no transpose) The F# changed to a Gb in the following keys: Db, E, Gb, Ab, B, C#, F# and G#
Might this be a bug?
Thanks for listening from Marty

That’s quite weird, and my system doesn’t need to trick BIAB in that way.
Let me try more tests.
You have build 720, correct?

I mine is build 717, which it reports is the latest for me! I'm going to check again at the PG website... Okay... now I build 720!!! Glad to have it, but it didn't change the interesting enharmonic behavior.
This is not a big deal, because switching to the key of C "fixes" it. Right???

I cannot duplicate that, for the most part.
First, the key signature does matter to BIAB in a number of ways as I mentioned, most notably the enharmonic spelling of notes and chords. I would expect F# to flip to Gb in flatted key signatures like Db, Gb and Ab. But I would NOT expect it to flip in F# or C#.
I'm running build 721 (720 is the latest public release) and I do not have trouble like you are describing. Using the right-hand column (Non-Transpose) I cannot get your results.
So...
Please try something: go to Options, Return to Factory Settings, Most. Save your settings to a file as you do this. Then restart BIAB and try your tests again.

My Dear Matt Finley!!!! Your diagnostic suggestion resulted in a definitive conclusion!!! Returning to (Most) Factory Settings "fixed" the problem. The question is Why it fixed it. When I changed the Preferences > Display to transpose for trumpet, the problem was back. Changed back to Concert 0 transpose and problem is gone!!!! (If you get a chance, try switching your Display transpose to trumpet and see if the situation is duplicated.)
I'm not sure why that is the way it is, but That's the Way It Is!!!!
WOW, thanks so much for sticking with this, Matt! It's been a very interesting process! We may all now return to our normal quarantined lives!
Warm regards from Marty

Fascinating.
I’m glad you are almost ok.
I did not know that you had a transposition in effect but the change from concert to Bb instruments involves subtracting two flats (or adding two sharps). F concert, a ‘flatted’ key signature, becomes G, a ‘sharped’ key signature. F# concert also crosses the ‘barrier’ from sharps to flats if you call the result Ab instead of G#, to use the key signature with fewer accidentals (always a desirable goal).
I need to try some more tests now that I know transposition is involved.

I remember that, thanks Bob. Sometimes I get one right. But I thought there was still some difficulty if a transposition display setting was in effect. In other words, it works if you are in concert pitch but still had difficulty if you weren't. I suppose I'll have to spend time checking this.
No argument about getting older.
