I'm hoping someone can tell me if what I'm trying to do is possible (or not). I've got a MIDI soft synth, called Winlive Synth Driver, which is selectable as a MIDI Output device in BIAB. I can get it to play MIDI sounds when I am not using BIAB but not when BIAB is open. Here's my setup:

*BIAB 2020 for Windows
*Windows 10
*Input - External MIDI controller keyboard - via USB
*Two soundcards - a built in one from NVIDIA and an external one plugged in via a USB port. I normally use the one in the USB port.
*Audio Driver type is ASIO, using ASIO4All v2.14
*MIDI Output Driver has "Winlive Synth Driver WSD" selected from the list box.
*The boxes for "Use VSTI/Dxi Synth" and "Route MIDI Thru to MIDI Driver" are both checked
*The DxiSynth Settings shows CoyoteWT, but I don't use it
*Audio Settings box is set to "ASIO [Always]"

This setup works just fine for recording MIDI in from the keyboard using MIDI sounds, or using a VSTi plugin like Sforzando, or any of several others. If I choose any MIDI instruments, however, no matter what configuration I select, it uses the built in Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth sounds. If I try to select the Winlive Synth driver, there are no sounds from the MIDI thru, or from using the keys in the Pianos tab from the mixer for any MIDI instrument, or from the MIDI track within BIAB.

What I'm guessing is that the ASIO configuration is incompatible with using this MIDI out driver. I know that when ASIO is loaded, it controls the sound card output and no other program can play sounds through the card, and that is by design. I just thought that if the system could play the Microsoft MIDI sounds, it should be able to play sounds generated from another MIDI driver.

I've really spent a good chunk of time and effort on this, so if there's an easy answer, then I'll make a point to dig deeper next time.

I am not familiar with Winlive Synth Driver but after reading about them I an idea of what going on based on my other VSTs.

To use this in BiaB it must be used as a VSTi.

This is a quote from the Winlive Synth Driver site "Winlive Synth Driver is a powerful multitimbral (up tu 16 part) virtual synthesizer, comptible GM/GS. It permit up to 128 polifony notes with a new concept sound base on compressed wave-table of 56 MB of memory. Software contains over 300 hi-quality Sound. This software can be used like a sound module, it permit low latency (until 50 ms) and can be connected to a Digital Keyboard using midi-In port."

You stated that DXiSynth settings show Coyote WT. I think that should be Winlive Synth Driver.

I hope this helps.

Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Mario - Thanks for the quick reply and your research.

There does not appear to be any way to run it as a VSTi, and I've tried a few other experiments to see if I could get it to work, with all sorts of variations with the ASIO configuration, and so forth. What I discovered is that it will either use the default CoyoteWT VSTi (if the box Use VSTi/DXi Synth is checked), and if it is unchecked I get no MIDI sound at all from anything. Apparently if the other box to Route Through to MIDI driver is not applicable when using ASIO (a popup says it is ignored). So it seems like this MIDI output option is just not going to work no matter what I try. I also tried a similar configuration in RealBand with the same results - no go.

It's not clear if the Winlive Synth driver is just not emulating a MIDI output device that BIAB can handle, or if it's due to my configuration. I'll revisit this if I decide to go with a MIDI synth device in the future.

If anyone has the Winlive Synth MIDI driver working with BIAB, I'd really appreciate if you could tell me how you have it set up.

Hi
As said above by Mario
If you are using Winlive Synth as a vst, that is what should show in the vst box, not coyote wave table.
Have you added it to your vsts and made it you default synth.

Is it in fact a vst if it is you will have to add it to your vsts then you can chose it from the pop up for default synth.
PS
As far as i can see it is not a vst just a virtual synth for windows or mac
so i am off course here.
So as such it should show up as a possible midi output driver in your midi settings. As my coolsoft virtual synth does in my set up
