Hi all Well just had a disastrous experience with W10 features update. First it took 6 or so hours to download and install. And despite being offered as ready for download, it will not run if I leave my Akai pro Audio interface Asio driver active as my default device in fact I have to power it down. Other wise it loads as far as the desktop as soon as the sound tries to run it says it has encountered an error and will report it and reboot. This cause it to go into loop of restart error, report, restart. Also windows reports Coolsoft midi synth has midi driver error and offers to repair but it only last for the current session. If I use the built in soundcard or the HD monitor one the pc works apart from Coolsoft as above. So with fingers crossed I a am restoring an Acronis image from April Update Acronis failed with an error. Now trying to go back to a previous build via windows recovery options. Note this is only available for 10 days after update to the latest version Let you know if it works may take some hours. Mike

Ugggh. Sorry to hear that sir. It always seems to be something with Windows updates. I reported on a different thread below in this forum that I had some USB driver issues causing my screens not to go into PowerSave. The odd things these updates cause is amazing.
Good luck Mike!

My laptop just updated yesterday, successfully, to build 1909. I do not have any setting to delay the update on that PC.
It's clear Microsoft has their own rollout schedule.
It also seems to be normal for Microsoft not to have tested the effect of their OS updates on every digital audio program and driver, even through long beta testing.

What an experience, I had a fail with version 2004 on my main desktop, wont try again for a while, as someone has said to me on a forum, you can pass on this update unless you feel like a challenge!
Believe me I don't, I just wanted the damm thing to install.
So restored my Acronis image, by the way though I have ATI 2010 and also ATI 2018, I hate the later version so much that I totally uninstalled it and make the images with ATI 2010 in Windows 7 (dual boot computer with Windows 10)
The only redeeming feature of ATI 2018 is that it can see My SSD where as ATI 2010 cant if I boot from the boot disk.
I also make an occasional image with Macrium Reflect as well just to be on the safe side, but as anyone who works with computer knows, that doesn't even guarantee that I wouldn't have to do a total reinstall.
Did you try to restore the image Mike both from within ATI app in Windows (sometimes when it reboots to restore, it can't see the image) and also try the boot rescue disk?

Latest version upgrade from v 1909 to v 2004.Not offered to all at the moment through Windows update, but if you download Windows media creation tool you can get it that way.
Only if you are up for a challenge though as not much of interest in it, and you have a good image of your drive in case things go wrong

Not officially as far as I know, its an official release but at the moment it seems is only offered to computers that Microsoft thinks is compatible, though that doesn't mean much as I got the message to download and it was a total failure. But if you are willing to give it a try, Google how to download Microsofts Media creation Tool, burn the downloaded install files to DVD or I think put on an USB stick and install from there.

The desktop I purchased November, 2019 shipped with Windows 10 Home version 1809. I immediately updated it to version 1903 and updated to version 1909 in January, 2020. Yesterday the computer downloaded and installed version 2004. Four operating systems in eight months.
Presently the computer works fine using the default motherboard audio which is a Realtek audio circuit. I record using the "what you hear" setting on the computer or use an external recorder so I have no audio interface.

I would hope that you were given the option whether to download and install or to give it a miss Jim.

I would hope that you were given the option whether to download and install or to give it a miss Jim. I am version 1909 here, it installed back in February. But the updates always download and install automatically, is there a place in Windows were you can set it so that it gives you the option of whether or not to install an update?

Hi again After many hours uninstalling then re down loading the W10 features update, having first removed my Akai pro interface and drivers from the system reinstalled And all worked well. BIAB worked fine with the on board sound Realtech. After much searching and research I found an updated Asio driver for the Akai pro for windows 8 and 10 driver version 2.954. It seems I was and had been using the W7 Asio driver inherited from my original W7 build when I upgraded to W10 . Mind you it worked fine right up to this latest windows update. Anyway installed the new driver and reconnected the interface and guess what worked like a dream. So nothing ventured nothing gained I tried it in BIAB fine all good and running, You know what I am sure it sounds better than before bit more umph and no sign of any bit crushing distortion. Watch this space Mike

But the updates always download and install automatically, is there a place in Windows were you can set it so that it gives you the option of whether or not to install an update? Yes, sort of. In Settings (the cog wheel icon after clicking in the lower left corner), go to Windows Updates. There are options which include manual installation and delaying for (I think) one week after Microsoft rolls it out for your PC.

I would hope that you were given the option whether to download and install or to give it a miss Jim. Musiclover, the upgrade was optional. I decided to upgrade for a couple of reasons. I've already done a Windows 10 "fresh start" multiple times on the desktop computer. For me the Windows 10 "fresh start" feature is one of the more desirable new features. Fresh start allows you to substitute an operating system image that doesn't contain bloatware for the original equipment manufacture (OEM) image that typically contains software and add-ons you don't want. You can even choose to keep your present settings or not. I went totally new going from version 1803 to 1903 and from 1903 to 1909. Version 1909 to 2004 was an upgrade, not a fresh start. I'm still loading programs and things onto the desktop so if version 2004 doesn't work out I can use the version 1909 image I have and start from scratch again without losing much effort. The feedback I've read indicates version 2004 is having trouble with specific audio drivers but there hasn't been any issues reported for motherboards with Intel or RealTech audio circuits. I'm sticking with the onboard audio, at least for the near future. If I keep version 2004 it will be supported until November, 2021 since Microsoft's new 18 month support cycle starts the day a version is released. Meanwhile there should be three additional version releases I can check out.

Keep in mind that the next time they have an update it will include everything that was in 2004. You gonna go until you die without ever updating?
It installed on all 6 of my PCs and I have had zero issues on any of them.

two of my pcs loaded 2004 faultlessly and my sound on the music pc is still intact even though i'm running an elderly Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum with a driver from a newer card.
the third pc is still stuck on 1903 and refuses to install 1909 let alone 2004. however, i had a similar issue with one of the others and had to wait until that version of windows 10 came to the end of its support and microsoft forced an update.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
