Hurricane Isaias looks like it's going to hit us frown

I'll likely be off-line for a a day or more. Being in a sparsely populated part of town, we are the last to get our power restored if it goes out.

If you need to reach me at nortonmusic.com, depending on power and Internet conditions it may take a while to get a response. Your patience is appreciated.

Thanks,
Notes

Thanks.

It's moving slowly, and weakening (thankfully on the weakening part). We're getting some rain and Tropical Storm force winds, but nothing drastic.

We haven't lost power, but the generator is ready, and we haven't lost Internet (obviously). The storm awnings are down, the panels are up, fresh water stored, and all the rest.

We're of course not out of the woods yet, but it looks like it's going to be a lot less severe than we initially thought.

Hopefully it will just continue to be a PITA.

What I'm most concerned about now are the people who live in mobile homes, manufactured homes, and RVs. It's not safe to stay in one so they go to shelters where COVID could be a breeding ground. I suppose a lot have chosen to say in their houses, as the winds aren't as strong as they were initially predicted.

Of all the natural disasters, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, volcanoes or earthquakes, I think hurricanes are among the most survivable. Plus you get advance warning to prepare.

Later,

At least the RV dwellers can take to the road in their portable home. I had family in that mess in Key West a couple of years ago and they headed northwest into western North Carolina. Fortunately their house wasn't damaged so when they returned everything was fine. They have since moved.

Isaias turned out to be more bark than bite for us. I over-prepared (thankfully).

With only tropical storm winds the nuke plant wasn't shut down, the beaches weren't evacuated and many of the mobile home, manufactured housing and RV people stayed home.

I spent the better part of today putting the storm awnings back up, taking the storm panels down, picking up branches and palm fronds, sweeping debris, and running the generator (it was out and needs to be run a few times a year anyway).

Good luck to the folks in it's path as it rides up the eastern seaboard and eventually makes landfall.

I see a lot of water on the radar. That's usually more of a problem than the wind unless it gets to cat 4 or 5.

It's taking an unusual path, but then with the global climate crisis, the weather isn't behaving like it did for most of my life so far.

Good luck to all in the path.

Central NC report: A little bit of wind here and 3.5" of rain overnight. My wife said it came through around 4:30am.... I was asleep. A few small branches down, mostly the dead ones. It knocked over the mexican sunflowers and that's about the extent of the impact here.

My daughter is a bit further down toward the coast and she's without power but no other damage.

If we have to have a hurricane.... this is how to do it.

Glad you got through OK. Isaias wasn't as fierce as others have been in the past. So it was not much more than a good practice run for us.

One bad thing about hurricanes is they can spawn tornadoes. This one created a couple of them and a F3 went through a mobile home park. It's wind field didn't die down over land as is normal. This one packed sustained winds of 65 mph (105 kph) all the way to Canada knocking out electrical power to about 1/3rd of the state of New Jersey. Nine deaths in the US.

Here in Florida, hurricanes sometimes spawn tornadoes. These are nothing like the ones in the Midwest or the ones in "The Wizard Of Oz". Our Florida twisters are not nearly as destructive.

They generally hit mobile home parks or airports. I guess it's the wide expanse of flat, treeless land has favorable conditions for them to touch down. (That is a wild guess, I've never researched it so it could be wrong.)

If the twisters hit a conventional house, more often than not they just damage some of the roof tiles. I've lived in Florida since I was a child and the only hurricane that I recall actually destroying an entire home was Andrew in 1992.

Of course with the global climate crisis, hurricanes are getting stronger and weirder than the 'canes of my youth so I'm not making any predictions.

Besides, it's terribly difficult to make predictions, especially about the future smile (I actually heard a newscaster say that years ago, and it made Leilani and me laugh out loud.)
