Hey all,
How do I Transpose only 1 bar? If the KEY IS NOT KNOWN.
thanks Do you want to Transpose the key signature or change the chord for that one bar? I don't know how to transpose to another key without first knowing the key that you want to transpose to. (I'm a little surprised that you can't work out the key signature, but maybe there's a good reason for that)

Since the key changes in the song__ I don't know how to answer this. If the key signature changes 'in the song' then it's relatively easy. Select the bar you want to change, press function key <F5> and then select 'Key Signature change to'. You don't have to know 'Key From', just 'Key To'. Presumably you know the key signature that you want to change to?

Thanks, thats one less potential variable to
go wrong. But has anyone tested this in a song with more than one key?
Does this only change the FOLLOWING bars, only, confirmed?
Another issue is I already started the song transposed to my guitar, which isn't 440.
I was hoping for a SHORT CUT key just to raise, or
lower selected bars by half steps. { or does anyone
have a secret workaround? |

Let’s say you want to transpose that bar up one step. You could say from C to D. Or F to G. It wouldn’t matter since everything goes up one step. The problem occurs when you get odd enharmonic spelling of notes if you don’t understand key signatures. In other words, you have notes and chords with several flats and all of a sudden in that one bar there are sharps. Best to learn what the key signature really is.
EDIT: I see you just included the detail it’s a half-step.

... It changes the key signature from that point forwards. You can change it again on other bars following on from that point.

I don't see any option to transpose any specific bar(s) only, BiaB supports transposing just the whole enchilada. Bar settings support changing key signatures for specific bars, yet that's not transposing. If it's just one bar, some manual adjustments should not be too strenuous . . .

Martin, I know we are in the BIAB for Windows forum, but do you have BIAB for Mac? I seem to recall a difference here. I also know that you know your stuff as well as any of us.
Anyway, in BIAB for Windows, there is Edit, Transpose, From .. To. The Transpose dialog box allows me to specify the starting bar (Transpose From), the number of bars to transpose (where I can enter a 1), Transpose From Key and Transpose To Key.
To the OP, it doesn't matter if you know what the key signature is, because there will be an entry in the Transpose From Key box telling you what BIAB thinks it is at that point (and that may well be C if you didn't enter a key signature). Whatever that is, add a half-step (using the OP's example) and there you go: the notation and chord(s) in that bar are raised by a half-step.

Thanks, Matt -> I definitely pulled a boner here. I do have the Windows version, yet neglected to check on the Edit menu - it's currently sometime in the middle of the night here in Europe . . . I just checked on the Bar settings feature and on some rightclick menu options. The Edit transpose feature requires 'from key' and 'to key', just as the original poster mentioned. Biab seemingly won't let me do that. It wants to know what Key from_____and what key to ____ ?
Since the key changes in the song__ I don't know how to answer this. I am not sure I understand the addressed problem here. What does KGU 2 mean by 'since the key changes in the song'? Songs often run through a variety of keys, yet are usually notated with just one key signature. It is this key signature that is meant by 'Key from' at the Edit transpose menu. KGU 2, Matt addressed this via it doesn't matter if you know what the key signature is, because there will be an entry in the Transpose From Key box telling you what BIAB thinks it is at that point Maybe that brings you to second base.

When in doubt, the song is written in C.
I'm not kidding. There are two reasons:
1) the person entering/creating the song forgot to change the default from C
2) the song is one of those that changes keys so often, notating each key signature change would drive you crazy

If it's just the melody that you are looking to transpose for a bar, I'd use Piano Roll mode.
This will allow you select all the notes in that bar and then they can be dragged up or down in a single action.
