Fun stuff. Arturo has always been a fine pianist.
Check out Donna Lee by the same duo.

The world of music is very large and I had not listen to Arturo for a long time along with Dizzy Gillespie and Doc Severinsen. A close cuban friend had mentioned his name in a recent conversation which prompted me to go see what was on youtube.
Youtube has become a pretty amazing resource. One can find the most famous to the most arcane little known music ever recorded.

Loved the Korg sound. I really disliked the breath controller kazoo sound!
Another video with Donna playing the Korg and Arturo playing the trumpet is excellent.
Doc-take it easy John this is just a sharp scalpel. It will not cut deep so don't worry. Me-I'm not John Doc-I know, I am!

I kind of smile when people talk about these "wind controllers" that are not wind controllers at all. They control nothing. They play notes from reeds. This thing that is currently coming back around has been around for a really long time. I had one of these when I was 8 in 1959. It is/was little more than a small accordion that used your lungs instead of bellows. My uncle bought one for me and the minute he handed it to me I blew into it and played it. Nothing new to an 8 year old accordion player with already over 3 years experience!! Suddenly now they are a hundred bucks and it has a long air tube and people are calling it all kind of different things. Back then it was called by the proper name, a melodica, and Hohner made it. What it NEVER was, was a "controller". The thing Yamaha makes like what Notes plays is a "controller", because it plays MIDI events. They also cost WAY more than the 30 bucks the melodica did. LOL!!

Jesus Molina is only 24 years old?? WHAT???
HOW can they play so many notes that fast? That short rendition of Donna Lee was more notes than I play in a month!
Never forget the night I saw Jaco, the only time I ever saw him, and he did that tune. My jaw, literally, dropped to the floor at the artistry I saw that night. I had heard Weather Report records, sure, but that was the only time I saw him live and he was gone not long after that. So grateful I got to see him.

So to clear up any confusion, Donna Lee is the name of the song. It was composed by Jesus Molina who is a world renowned keyboard player and multi instrumentalist from Colombia SA. The wind instrument he played in the video I posted in no way defines his overall skills. I don't know if Arturo had anything to do with the Donna Lee composition. There is also another song called Donna Lee composed by the world renowned jazz bass player who played for Weather Report. I have no idea if any of that is related. I had made the original post because I wanted to take note of Arturo's "secondary skills" on keyboards, tongue in cheek, "what a world famous horn player does in his spare time". Jesus Molina is also well known for his success in dealing with obesity. That we should all be so fortunate to be so talented. Cheers, Billy EDIT: John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III, based on what Eddie said was the person who composed the song Donna Lee. He was also killed by a club owner here in Miami who only did four months in jail for that...go figure!

Donna Lee is the name of the song. It was composed by Jesus Molina.
Billy, Donna Lee was written by Charlie Parker in the mid/late 40s. 50+ years before Jesus Molina was born. He initially recorded it in 1947 I believe. Miles Davis tried to claim it too, but when you consider the be-bop nature of it, and that Charlie Parker prided himself on never playing a song the same way twice, who can say. But I CAN say it was written a long time before this amazing talented kid was born. Geeze, it was a study piece in college music classes when I attended college in the 70s! Still 20 years before he was born. Coincidentally, on Veterans Day, I can share that my degree was funded by the money I got from the GI Bill!!

Cool stuff Eddie. As I said I really did not know who wrote the song. Jaco has also been credited with writing it. Perhaps jazz is a bit like the blues, everyone steals as much credit as they can...lol
Happy veterans day Eddie!
I am glad to hear you got something out of all that craziness you had to go through. Dealing with the realities of surviving the Vietnam war is most likely only evident to those of us who were there.
Cheers,
Billy

My jaw, literally, dropped to the floor at the artistry I saw that night. I do not think the word "literally" means what you think it does. Unless you're Jacob Marley's ghost. Now I need to go educate the internet on the difference between "loose" and "lose". I hear that's the quickest way to become beloved on forums!

If I were to see that, I would HAVE to add "As opposed to your left?" I go nuts on "they're" vs "there" vs "their", too. (Or two if you will. Even to!) Our vs are, etc... To think people typically go to at least 12 years of school being taught the native language of the country in which they were raised....

Or correct a reply that says "Your right." Yep, I'm that guy. I'm also the one who points out to his co-workers that Albert Einstein was never said that clever quip in their signature line.
