I just had a spiritual experience.

For the first time, I bookmarked the Real Tracks set list on this website and went to the very first set.

As I clicked on everything, I heard a new song I need to write right now. If I just keep clicking through the list, all the way to the bottom I will be able to write 7,000 new songs this year.

Why did I not see this before? Darn. It is all right there. They were in my little box all this time. Why didn't anyone tell me???

All I need to add is lyrics. How hard can it be??

I was kinda being silly, but I did bookmark this link and I do refer to it daily. Just pulled a song idea from set 4. Working on it right now.

If others are like me, they may forget just how much inspiration there is to be had simply by listening to solo instrument demos and band demos from every single set--and there are almost 400, I think. Or more by now!

Amazing chord progressions and instruments and grooves. Enough to last a lifetime. If you find something you like, you know where to find it, if you master the use of the style picker.

It seems very obvious, but I keep forgetting!! It's not just about what's coming next, it's also about what you already have!

Back in the heyday of the Nash Mill, song writers routinely submitted 100+ songs a year -- living on the numbers. A song and a production are, it goes without saying, different things. I got this from a lecture by a retired song writer from TN. Wonder what Floyd would say about this.

I thought so, too, Dave. I mean, it could get pretty deep on the topics he's raised, but, as far covering the waterfront goes, Ralph Murphy did in spades. Seemed relevant to some of the things you are doing, also, David.

Ed,

This is what I just sent to my NSAI group and it seemed relevant.

Hey Folks,

Here is a link to the late great Ralph Murphy, VP of ASCAP and an NSAI legend. This is a two hour workshop on songwriting. I consider it a must watch for songwriters. At least watch the first 10 minutes, where he talks about the “psychological profile of the hit song writer.” Very interesting.

It kind of made me laugh. He says that hit song writers have experienced loneliness, trials and tribulations, feeling left out, most likely a hugely dysfunctional childhood, often a misfit, mildly dyslexic, have a hard time getting along, always wanted to belong, feel pain and wounds of the soul all of the time and have a desperate need to be loved. (Or something like that.) Then he asks something like this: Sound like you? Well, get ready to write the hits!

I got news for you buddy.... You really need to sit down for this first.

Are you sitting down? Good... now.....

In the band in the box style picker window.... if you click on practically any on the styles there, you can get a complete demo song to play....

Wait!!! I know what you're thinking.... this is too good to be true.... but I absolutely assure you that this is not bogus. And.... if you have an internet connection, some of the newer and more obscure styles will also play their demos.

Do I need to get you some smelling salts? I hope you're ok and have handled this news well....

And if you are really feeling sparky, you can click on another button right there on the screen and that very demo will instantly load into your working project..... wow!!! hard to imagine, I know.... but I swear, it's the real deal.

You can thank me later.

Wait a minute!

Are you saying that I don't need to spend two thousand dollars on a course to teach me now to write a catchy chord progression?

That if I just sample some demos and load them, BIAB will make a super catchy chord progression for me, already mixed in Xtra Styles, so all I have to do is sing?

You're lying man!!!

Haha I love this. The amount of times I've listened to one or the demos on BIAB and had loads of ideas of where I could go with it. It's the main I tried using some of the AI composers because it's a great way to get a bit of inspiration.

That Ralph Murphy lecture is brilliant. I find it fascinating listening to different hit songwriter's. I bought Gary Barlow's (UK hit singer, was the main writer in Take That) songwriting course on the BBC for that reason. I don't think you can ever teach someone to become a songwriter, but you can give someone the tools and techniques then inspire them to get started.
