Sorry for all the questions but Live Chat is useless. I get much clearer responses here.
I have BIAB 2012 on one computer and I want to upgrade to 2021,but to another computer. Can I do this? Or do I have to upgrade to the same computer that BIAB 2012 is on? I what I am not clear on is does the BIAB upgrade to 2021 use the old 2012 program to build on, or does BIAB 2021 do a completely new program download?
My worry is this - I have BIAB 2012 on a very old computer that probably isn't long for this world. I want to upgrade (and pay the upgrade price) but I want the upgrade on a new computer that I haven't even purchased yet and one that will not have BIAB 2012 on it.

No problem. Likely 2012 was before any machine licensing was used. But should not even maker, you will get license number when you purchase the 2021.

I'm not as sure.
Purchasing the full program is different from purchasing an update. Dan is correct that the activation system was not used in 2012. Still, I think I would take my installation routine from 2012 and put that onto the new computer, then purchase the update for 2021. The update may require something already on your computer. Not sure given how much time has elapsed.

I do still have the CDs with the 2012 program but most new computers don't have CD slots.

You didn't say which package you are upgrading to. I'm presuming it's not the PlusPak, which is just for upgrading from last year's UltraPak (or its equivalent, as you can do PlusPak upgrades every year from an original UltraPak). So what you get will be a complete install of the Pak you purchase. You will be able to install that on a new machine.
Since you mentioned CD's, that seems too indicate that what you currently have is probably the ProPak or maybe the MegaPak of 2012. The higher end Paks came on an external UDB drive.
There are ways to reinstall that old version on your new machine without a CD player (but you will need to initially be able to read the CDs on the old machine). PM me if you need to know how to do that.
But if you are upgrading from ProPak to ProPak or MegaPak to MegaPak, you will get everything the old version offered plus all the new content and even if they send you a CD, the content will be available in your online account and you can just download and install from there.
Let us know which Pak you are buying. It should be a complete install.
Note that if you decide to first install 2012 and then install 2021 on top of that install, you will need to run the cleanup routine, since PGMusic has changed their file and folder structure since then. Just ask in the forum here if you need help.

I thought we had covered this in your other thread.
Any way same goes, if you want to access your old stuff you need to install the upgrade over the old version.
I would do that first.
Then copy the entire C: BB folder from the old pc, to the new pc’s C: drive and run the installer on there to install fonts and things.

You could copy the bb folder onto an external USB hard drive, and then from there onto your new computer. Then, install Band-in-a-Box 2021 into that folder. The cleanup function that others have mentioned should be run automatically by the 2021 installer. It may not be necessary to start from your 2012 bb folder, but doing so makes sure that you don't lose anything that you used to have (add-ons, bonus paks, etc.)
