Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if it's a bug or not - at least I don't understand this behavior (BiaB 2021, Build 813):

I have a .mid file in 0-format (one single track, multiple channels). In BiaB I select File => Import => Import Melody from MIDI file. According to my understanding it should be enough to select all channels of the FIRST track in order to import all available MIDI data (because the MIDI only has one single track - checked this with a MIDI editor), but that's not the case. When I check the notation view of different tracks, I can't see anything. I checked my .midi file in more detail and saw that the notes are placed in channel 2. Shouldn't be a problem because I selected all channels of the first track. Here's the thing: If I select the second track and its channel 2, the midi data is imported. That doesn't make sense to me because there is only 1 track in the .midi file and if I have such a 0-format midi (single-track) then it should be fine if I only select all channels (or in my special case channel 2) of the FIRST track of the BiaB import window.

Maybe I'm just missing something :-).

Kind regards,
Alex

Just check in Preferences - Channels, check that the melody Midi channel is still channel 4.
I have found that importing Midi files changes the channel setting. I have reported this but not sure if it is just on my end or a BIAB problem.

Also, writing harmonies to Soloist track has same effect on those channel settings.

Thanks Beachboy for your suggestion, but I think the channel settings in the prefs don't play a role in the issue I described. My problem (or possibly misunderstanding) is related to the import process of a midi file (not the midi output).

Kind regards,
Alex

Midi on Melody track would not play for me until I checked and changed the Melody channel back to 4

My point is that there are no notes present in the notation view at all after my midi import - it doesn't matter which output channel I set in the prefs because the problem already occurs one step earlier.

Kind regards,
Alex

I hope I'm understanding correctly....

When you load in a MIDI file, all the channels are put on the Melody track as a multi-channel MIDI. The channels are not split across the different BIAB tracks.

To access these, you need to use the green SEQ button.

The image that I have below shows this button in standard view. CTRL+T toggles between standard and full-screen views.

Regards,
Noel

Alex,
I see what you mean.
I just imported a type 0 midi track to Melody with same results as you.
However, I noticed that the import Melody from Midi file “directed” the Midi to Utility Tracks not the Melody. The Midi can be seen on the Utility Tracks in notation. Can you check if this is what happened on your end.

Hi

OPEN & IMPORT ARE NOT THE SAME!

Import midi file puts the midi on the utility tracks according to your selection in the pop up window.

Open midi file puts the whole midi file on the melody track if it is multi track midi you get them all. If you only want what you know is the lead melody track you could split this of into a new 1 single track midi first and open that.

Yes, and resets the Melody Midi Channel to 0 regardless of the destination.

(At least mine does , others might need to check)

HI Beachboy

Yes you are right as soon as you import a mid to even just the utility tracks it changes the melody ch to 0.
To make matters worse this will stay at Zero 0 until you change it to 4 as it should be even through shut down and restart it will still be at 0 .

Also the problem is global and applies to both 64 and 32 bit versions of the program regardless of which version you trigger the problem. Still putting it right in any version puts it right in the other.

Hi Mike,

Also, if you copy the Melody Track (Channel 4) to say the Soloist Track (Using Copy Special) then it copies the track OK (as Channel 4) but then sets the Soloist Track to Channel 0.

The quick way to check if this is happening to a Midi Track is to right click on a note event in the Piano Roll and you will see that the Re-channel Option is set to Channel 1 and not the correct Channel (ie Melody 4, Soloist 8 - This is how I first discovered the problem)

I have reported (twice) but not sure what I'm saying is being interpreted correctly. Maybe if someone else reports it, they may express it better than I did.

No, not fixed copying Midi tracks (ie Melody to Solo) still resets the destination track to channel 0
