I'm running the latest BIAB build 814 and I have a song that uses the SINATRA.sty style. In the middle is a two bar break with each bar having four shot chords entered as "C.. C.. F.. F." (that's two dots on the first three chords and one on the last and then repeated in the second bar) The last drum beat on each bar sounds really distorted.

Does anyone else have this problem or have I got something set up wrongly?

Thanks for any help

Andy:

I can't replicate your problem.
I opened a "New" BIAB file, enabled the SINATRA.sty style and entered the chords as you described.
The single dot after the 2nd F chord indicates to BIAB not to play anything on that beat.
There shouldn't be any sound on that bar at all, including drums.
If the other 3 shots sound OK, perhaps it has to do with the sound card???

Can you try your 4 chord sequence in a New file with the same style and see if it's the same?
I suppose you already tried:
- shutting down BIAB and restarting
- shutting down the computer and restarting
- doing a BIAB "Return to factory settings"

Let us know. Someone here will be able help you through it.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Lloyd.

I'd tried most of what you suggested, but I've tried it all now. Full factory reset and a new song with just those two bars and it still sounds wrong. The first three beats are sort of OK, but there is something like a ghost beat that sounds around the fourth beat. As you say, the fourth beat should be silent.

I'm using the built-in sound card in my laptop and I have the coyoteWT VSTi/DXi Synth selected. This is the same as I had before upgrading to 2021 and it sounded fine then.

Well at least you're not going bonkers, I can recreate it on my laptop using the Coyote WT VSTi/DXi Synth.
On my desktop, I use the Cakewalk TTS-1 as suggested by Peter in his "No Brainer" thread, and that works perfectly.
Any chance you'd like to download that and give it a try?

I know it's kind of a pain, and I know Coyote should work, but I don't have any other suggestions,
unless you have the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth as an option in your "MIDI/Audio Driver Setup" window.
You could try that.

Looks like the MIDI part of that style generates fine, but for some reason the subbed Realdrums are what's adding the ghost drums. I'll report it to the development team.

OK, thanks Simon. And thanks Lloyd for proving it isn't just me.

I had seen Peter's "No Brainer" thread, but not acted on it. I will give it a try and see if things sound better.

Simon:

As far as I can tell, the "SINATRA.sty" itself is all MIDI.
It's just when you play it with a built-in soundcard on a laptop that it sounds strange.

SINATRA.STY is indeed an all MIDI style, but BIAB by default will automatically substitute a Realdrum for the MIDI drums when it has a reasonably close match, which with this style it does. That's what's causing the issue Andy is having, as I can replicate it on my end.

Andy - on this particular style, you can right click the drums track and choose Force Drums Track To MIDI Drums, and that should solve the distortion issue for you.
