The whole vaccine issue has been pretty strange for me. Baptist hospital sent me a email to say they could give me the shot. When I applied they said they had no more appointments. Then they canceled the whole program.
The VA call and ask if I wanted the vaccine and I said yes. They said they would get back to me. Who knows when.
The University of Miami sent me a email saying they would give my wife a shot. I called, they answered on the second ring and within five minutes I got a appointment for Eva the next day and a appointment for the second shot. I ask if I could get a shot also. They said yes but not now but they would let me know.
If I ever get a vaccination do you think it will be safe to play a gig? Will you play if you get one?

I got the first dose of the Moderna vaccine 2 days ago and the next is scheduled for February 16.
I am guessing the 2nd dose will render me relatively safe by this spring.
Before Covid-19 I was playing about 6 times a month almost exclusively at retirement/memory/assisted living facilities. As we all know they were hit by the virus very hard. I have two cousins in their 80’s who are in independent living facilities who I got to play for at least once a month, I miss that contact.
I am approaching 80 and most likely not return to playing once this pandemic is over, it’s not worth the chance.

My wife and I got our Moderna vaccine last week and the second shot is scheduled for the second week in February. As our doctor indicated we had a sore arm for about 4-5 days. We were also very tired for about the same time. Our doctor said the second shot's side effects will be the same but somewhat worst for the being tired part. So if I were planning on playing out again I'd have to wait until all of the fatigue was gone.
I'm in a fitness protection program. I'm been hiding from exercise.

I think people need to forget about playing gigs for all of 2021.
Wake up folks! We're in an international pandemic!
Our lack of any kind of legitimate response in the USA for the past year means we have to buckle down NOW to stop the spread. How many people have to die for us to finally pay attention?!
I'll get the vaccine at my earliest opportunity.

We have live music going on in Key West. Not a lot. Before the pandemic we had 300 live performances a week at 55 venues. Now we are down to 10 to 15 venues.
The venues are struggling to survive and can not afford to pay the normal amount but are doing what they can. Everyone is just trying to survive. Some places have closed and will never reopen.
The amount of Covid-19 is pretty low in the keys which helps. When the pandemic first started they closed the road. You could only go there if you lived there or worked there.
I have been very fortunate to have a good business that has done exceptionally well in 2020.
I just play for fun and hope I can get a few tips to give to the band. I have several friends who are full time musicians. 2020 has been very hard on them.
The state of Florida has made it virtually impossible for musicians to get unemployment. It's a bad deal I hope the vaccine will help to solve.

The effect it will have on me is positive. I can claim that the shot hurt my arm really bad and that, and only that, is why I suck so bad!!
My cousin lived in Key West for 17 years, and one of my friends plays there in February when they have Put-In-Bay at Sloppy Joe's. And we watch him on the webcam feed.

I no longer play professionally. i enjoy open mic nights but here in the UK they've disappeared. whether they will come back after we've all been vaccinated i simply don't know.
thanks for the excuse eddie - i'll make sure i use it if i do play in public again.
and as for music in general, glastonbury has been cancelled for the second year running.

We got our first Moderna jab and will get ouir next one early February.
Since 1985 I've targeted the 'senior citizen' community, which is a big and reliable market. Or was until COVID.
I suspect when enough people get vaccinated the business will creep back in as the people get less concerned about getting sick and possibly going to the great gig in the sky.
I lost my entire season, 10 months out of work, but I now have 2 gigs for next season already.
For my market, the people who grew up with live music, I think they will want it back as soon as they feel safe.

Went to Disney Springs in Orlando last weekend after a family meeting settling an estate. There were several places with live music. The performer was segregated by some barriers with about 10 to 12 feet all around them. Everyone has to wear a mask and gets a temperature check going in. So far at Disney, no tracing has lead to anyone getting infected there. It was good to see performers getting paid to play again. It will come back but I think we are looking at Fall for most of the state. Johnson and Johnson vaccine is going to be approved for you within a month or so, then there will be 3. It is easier to transport and store as it is only 1 shot with no freezer required. Close to a million people a day or getting a shot right now and that is only going to go up. This is a massive undertaking and of course government has never met a project it can't mess up and spend 3 times what is needed to do. 1st rule of government contracts, why buy 1 when you can buy 3 at 6 times the cost.
My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

More strange but good new for me. I got a automated message from the VA around 1300 saying if I wanted the vaccine to show up at the Miami VA. When I arrived they told me that the message had been sent in error. They said they would give me the shot anyway. They had to take more vaccine from the freezer which delayed things by a short time....about 45 minuets.
So, my wife yesterday with the Moderna vaccine. And me today with Pfizer vaccine.
My wife's arm is a bit red and is painful. It has only been a few hours for me but nothing so far.
It appears that the logistics of of all this vaccine business is pretty complex. I assume the contact and notification part of the puzzle is really difficult. We feel like we have just been very lucky with all this.

Bob, my guess is the open mic nights will come back at some point because the bar makes money off having more people. I always had fun when I got to play in the UK. I can't sing worth a damn but as I was born in Texas I don't have to work very hard to put on a real redneck Texas accent...lol Depending on what city you are in here in the USA open mic nights can be a pretty big deal for the bar. The open mic thing is a great place to meet new musicians and in some cities a place to get to play with some really famous people. Hope everything gets better for you guys. Billy

I think open mic nights or even days will start to see an increase of activity in the near future, if in fact it hasn't already started.
I'm basing this on the activity in this country with karaoke establishments .

Here in the Cleveland area we have open mic night everywhere. BUT... most of them really stink. You know "that guy" who says "All my friends tell me I am a good singer"? That's who comes to most of the open mic nights. I have always wanted to walk up to one of those people and tell them "Whatever you do, hang on to those friends!"
Now, there is one guy here, named Brent, who used to hold a Wednesday night even that was a songwriter showcase. 3 songs per artist in 20 minute time slots. Copy songs were prohibited. There was a stretch of about 14-16 weeks in a row that I attended, performed 3 times. Then it got clique-ish and Brent's friends got the prime time slots every week and a couple of them rotated the same 5 songs in and out so it got boring and I quit going. I don't know if he will start that up again when the Covid dust blows away.
Karaoke I will not even attend. The only time I ever went to Karaoke night was when the Motown band was very new and we were looking for exposure. All 5 of us would go, in our black satin band jackets, and we would sing to either the DJs tracks or a CD I made of us playing at rehearsal with no vocals. The guitar player we had then didn't sing, but for "show of force" reasons we stood him at a dead mic so it looked like he was singing. We got a fair amount of work from that. That place had us in alternating Saturdays for a while and then when summer came and the outside patio bar was open we played EVERY Saturday afternoon at 2. And the bar across the river heard us and came over, which ended up with us playing there every SUNDAY afternoon! That was when we were playing a ridiculous amount. We did 320 dates that year by virtue of playing those doubleheaders 3 times a week. Those were the days! Tues, Wed, Thur, Fri x2, Sat x2, Sun x2. From mid May to mid October. No more!

- The bartenders get paid
- The cooks get paid
- The wait staff gets paid
- The bouncer gets paid
- The provisioners get paid
- The floor sweeper gets paid
- The toilet cleaner gets paid
- The musician gets nothing and in most cases the songwriters don't either as open mic places usually avoid ASCAP licenses.
That tells me that the management thinks the musicians are worthless - worth less than the owner, manager, bartender, cook, waiter/waitress, bouncer, provision, floor sweeper, and even the toilet scrubber. These are all important people who contribute to the profitability of the venue, but so are the musicians. So if the establishment doesn't respect musicians and pay them what they are worth, I don't respect the business, and they won't get any of my money. Exception: If I know there is a house band getting respectable pay and people sit in for free, I don't mind. But that's just me. BACK ON TOPICAfter I get my second Moderna shot I'll definitely be looking to gig. I'll probably look for an outdoor venue because that will be more protective for my audience members who are like extended family to me. Insights and incites by Notes

Yet musicians FLOCK to jam nights! I almost never went to a jam night and never performed, and it's something to notice that more than half of the people who go to EVERY jam night EVERY week don't play in a band. They go on stage, play the 2 songs they know, and get empty praise from their pals to feed their insecurity. And the jam night heroes who ARE in bands give their talent away for free and then complain because there's no work. Well, you keep giving bar owners free bands, and as in any area of sales your lowest price soon becomes your highest price. If your lowest price is free, that's on you.

Well...perhaps you guys who don't like the "open mic" nights have never been to a good place.
I have played with Robin Ford, and Larry Carlton just to name a few really good guitar players at the Baked Potato in Studio City, Ca. It is a pretty famous place.
It is or use to be a place where musicians went to see their friends.
I have played at The Big Easy in Houston Texas with several world famous blues players. I have occasionally played in a dive biker bar in Tucson Az. because it was fun and other musician friends I know agreed to meet up there.
Most all really good open mic sort of venues have a house band.
Blues jams are a place to have fun playing without having to work. Not everyone has the time or desire to play professionally.
Not everything in life is about money. Ever post a original song here on the forum that you spent hours putting together? Did you get paid for that? Ever give one of you CDs away for free? If you think playing for free in an open mic is bad, go to LA where it is pay to play...lol
Back to vaccine...day two and my arm is a little sore and I did not sleep well last night. My wife is suffering greater arm pain with the Moderna vaccine than me with Pfizer...have no idea why.

It was advertised as an open mic but when I showed up the "house band" told me I wasn't playing. They were regulars who discouraged newcomers.
I left at half time, cried in the parking lot hugging my instrument then warned every music instructor I knew not to send their students there.
It closed up soon afterwards.
Nope, no open mic for me.

maybe its different in the UK but the open mic nights i used to attend were just groups of musicians that got together in a room at a pub. no house band, no management and the room came free because of the extra booze sales.
in some cases we even just played in the bar next to the ordinary punters.
