My MacBook Air 2013 running High Sierra 10.13.6
Last night I got a black screen, nothing! Tried to do all the reset options
and none would bring it to life. Tried again this morning and still nothing but
a black screen. The power cord always showed green.
And then while on hold for Apple help, the Apple logo lit up and the machine
powered up and is working as if nothing ever happened.

The Apple tech suggested that possibly I had too many programs running
which I did, BB, GarageBand, iTunes. He suggested I upgrade to Mojave or Catalina
but not Big Sur.

As stated above, I’m using High Sierra 10.13.6 and running BB 2016 and have had no problems. (I tried unsuccessfully to get BB 2018 to run for 6 months and gave up)

My question is should I have any problems with Mojave? or Catalina?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure that having too many programs running would cause that issue, but if your computer gets stuck like this again try holding down the power button for 10 seconds to force it to shut down completely, then try to turn it back on.

As I mentioned in our chat earlier, with BIAB, you shouldn't have many issues with Mojave, but I personally prefer High Sierra. Do not upgrade to Catalina or higher as BIAB 2018 and earlier will not work.

High Sierra support ended last November. Mojave is supported till next November. You have more support options from Apple if running a supported MacOS. Just sayin’…

In the meantime, it looks like your Mac is taking way too long to shut down. Simon’s power switch works but doesn’t fix the problem. The following should. Not only does this reset your Mac to default but also every installed app. Launch Services sometimes become corrupted during a Security Update.

Reset Launch Services

1. Open Terminal and run these commands (copy and paste) then hit Enter or Return:
2. sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network
(It will now ask for your Admin password)
3. killall Dock
4. sudo mdutil -E /
5. Restart your Mac

You will see many pages of commands, one set for each app. This is normal.

I first ran into this when my 2010 iMac and my wife’s 2015 MacBook Air wouldn’t shut down while attempting to run a 2019 Security Update over High Sierra—holding the Power switch was the only way to shut down. After the March 2020 Security Update, my iMac Pro would take 6 minutes to begin booting. In each case, resetting Launch Services fixed me up. Apps launch more quickly, too.

Simon, thanks for your help here and via chat.
Mike, thanks for the Apple support information.
The Terminal process seems scary with my limited knowledge.
Fortunately everything is back to normal for now.
