Chuck Mangione did an album in 1980 or 81 that he called Tarantella. It was a benefit concert for the victims of an earthquake in Italy. It was like a 30 piece band and it was a who's who of jazz cats. Does anybody else remember that album? That was one album I literally wore the grooves off of and had to buy it again. There were 2 versions of the album. One was 3 platters. The other was just the highlights but it had The 11th Commandment and The Hill Where The Lord Hides, 2 of my favorites. Dizzy Gillespie was a guest and did Manteca and Night in Tunisia. Now down the rabbit hole of trying to find a CD version of that 3 album set. It's 40 years ago so this is going to be tough.
Never heard of it but was curious - I enjoyed the first part of the album I listened to
Not sure if you are familiar with discogs - but there are lots of copies for sale online there. Interestingly I'm only seeing vinyl records and cassette copies for it, no CDs.
Yeah I have seen that and we have 2 local stores, but I have nothing on which to play vinyl anymore. I don't think it ever made it to CD. Track 5 I believe was The Hill Where The Lord Hides. That and Bellavia were the stars for me. The 11th Commandment was track 2 I believe and it's 12 minutes of being back in college jazz classes!!
I have the album somewhere and have listened to it many times. I’ve always enjoyed his music and seeing him live. In the 80’s I took a carload of high school students to see Mangione perform with the intent of introducing them to jazz. It worked, they still recall what a great experience it was. And they still enjoy jazz.
His 'Live at the Hollywood Bowl' is pretty impressive also, and may be easier to find. Huge band with lots of talent I'm sure I have that on CD around here somewhere .. probably in this very room. It was about the same era edit - .. found it; buried under some Jean Luc Ponty, Yes and Weather Report CDs <grin> Thanks for the reminder, I'll probably give those couple CDs a spin in the near future That was a double CD with the songs you mentioned and many others .. but not quite the same; 70 piece orchestra instead of 30 ..
That Hollywood Bowl show with the 70 piece orchestra was OFF THE CHAIN!
This whole topic sent me down the rabbit hole to find out where Chris Vadala is these days. He was one of the smoothest woodwind players I ever saw. And sadly that research turned up his death in 2019. Another cancer victim. Man I hate that disease. Got my father and at least two dozen other people I knew. 9 women died from breast cancer among them. That's why I nag my female friends to get mammograms every October.
