I'm not averse to slaughtering my own goats by any means, but it gets a bit messy in my small apartment.

Joking aside, you forgot "building your own microphones, preamps, recording gear, amplifiers, and electronics" which is a big part of my musical expression and inspiration. Built a new synth? Sweet, let's write a song with it.

I think it is different from BAND IN A BOX.
Arcade 2.0 cannot input chords, select styles, and generate music.

The current Arcade 2.0 has just become a sound sampler. Or edit the chords yourself, edit all the content.

As long as BAND IN A BOX adds similar electronic tones, it can immediately surpass Arcade 2.0

Can you recommend any free VSTi that Biab could include for electronic sounds so if they add more electronic midi style MidiSuperTracks there will be a synth/s preset for them ?

I wouldn't know what would be the best, I though swingbabymix would know.

Because now BIAB lacks electronic sound, there is no lack of guitar. More modern electronic sounds. grin

FYI - there are a number of free synths with 100s with electronic sounds available right now. Take a MIDI track or convert a RT to MIDI and use the VSTi. This may be better for you then a number of RTs. YMMV

I'll have to do a song to demo what I mean.

Life is short so make sure you spend as much time as possible on the Internet arguing with strangers.

Hope to hear your demo song.
In fact, this is a question of production ideas. The overall style of BAND IN A BOX is soft.

I basically don't use the drums in BIAB, I use UJAM instead, which will make the music feel more modern as a whole.

Including BASS, the electronic tone actually needs to be more modern. Nowadays, a lot of music generally feels harder and higher. I don't know what vocabulary is more suitable.

I also like the current BIAB style and it is very comfortable. But it does lack a modern feel, even if it replaces MIDI, it is still a bit different from modern music.

If a lot of guitar parts are added to a song, it may not feel very modern. Because many songs nowadays are just a drum and bass, plus some electronic sounds. However, the requirements for singing people are actually very high. Modern songs and vocals are all very good.

At present, BIAB's overall arrangement is more in line with common requirements. I don't know how to describe it in English, but that's roughly what it means.

Swingbabymix, you are not using the potential of BIAB for creating modern electronic music.

As Mario points out, a MIDI track can play any MIDI instrument sound the MIDI data instructs it how and when to play. BIAB can play MIDI files and depending on the MIDI instrument and quality of the MIDI track data and VSTi, the BIAB program will faithfully produce a high quality MIDI song. Playing a MIDI file in BIAB is not dependent on a BIAB MIDI style.

Your point seems to be that BIAB lacks having its own modern MIDI Styles. The issue isn't that BIAB doesn't have modern MIDI styles, it does, there's hundreds of them and they've been adding and updating them for years. The issue is that over short periods of time, modern music continues to progress and change particularly using unique and custom human percussive sounds, inverted and stretched samples so that quickly, the existing BIAB modern sounds are no longer up to date with what is current in that market today. Jazz, country, some pop and many other genres don't have this issue of constantly becoming obsolete that MIDI concentric music does.

BIAB provides a simple solution to this issue today and into all the future morphing and ongoing becoming obsolete consistent with the ever changing modern music genre.

Take any high quality MIDI song file and quickly and easily convert it into a BIAB style. Then, just like Austin Hull with Make Pop Music analyzes and replicates a song "in the style of Ariana Grandes Songs (34+35, Obvious, Positions) from her new album, you can start with a quality current Modern Music MIDI Song and convert it into a BIAB Style to create your own original song with the feel, groove, instrumentation and everything else it takes to replicate that sound. Then simply load your custom style into BIAB, choose high quality VSTi's and instruments and you're set.

Here's a video tutorial by PG Music: Note that this function has been available since 2013....

i agree completely with your post.
i think what sbmix is possibly missing is modern music is all about useing the right plug in instrument sounds.
and samples etc.
the other day i was mucking around with some urban and funk styles, ....but then plugging in plug ins with modern sounds in.
i keep on suggesting the computer music mag (pipeline
i think the download non paper version is 5 buks.)
BECAUSE it includes a bunch of free synths like dune and zebra and sample players you can play modern
samples with.

sbmix.
before you post anymore that biab isnt modern sounding PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING.
1. like i just did this week, go through and AUDITION IN DETAIL every single pg music style and demo. there are thousands. and save the styles you like.
in the process write down the instrument real trak
id's you like for modern sounding productions, and patches and real drums. as you come acrtoss them.
2. only after haveing done the above THEN tell me you dont hear any sound pictures you can use in modern songs.
crikey, just tother day i came across some sounds that sounded like they could be used in modern songs.
3. with your shortlist of styles saved, and i'm sure youll have at least 40. now plug in free vsti synths and sample players with modern sounds from the net or from computer music mag i mentioned. (you tube has demos of various cm mag plug ins.)

in summary sbmix from the songs you have given examples of i sincerely believe its only a question of HOW YOUR USEING BIAB....as well as your choice of plug ins.
tell me out of the tons of real trak examples you dont hear any sounds that cant be sliced/diced/used in modern songs.

best to you/happiness.

I'm reading this thread with great interest - being able to produce contemporary pop music tracks with Band in a Box - and then possibly combining that with classic BiaB real tracks (jazz, big band, country ...) could open up completely new application areas and target groups.

Yes! I think new contemporary pop styles augmented (to the taste of the songwriter) by Realtracks from other BIAB genres could be very interesting. I hope PG can make a more user-friendly way of navigating substitute realtracks.

According to the current progress rate, it is estimated that it will take 2025 or 2030 to achieve it

Just a quick comment around the discussion of "dull chord sounds", assuming some need for BiaB to adapt and provide them. From what I can tell as a relative newcomer to using this tool, is that BiaB covers almost all of the chord families, making their sounds available, as described by composers in standard notation form, with a couple of exception. I in Major, and Minor are full covered. II in Major and Minor are almost fully covered, including their IV substitutes. V is fully covered in Major, mostly in minor.

The areas of difference are the upper extension sounds in II minor, and the various forms of V in minor, as well as ways of stating chromatic sounds, mostly reflective of Minor uses of built up chord Shapes in upper extensions, augmented, and diminished sounds. These get fairly difficult to pin down with a chord name.

One area BiaB could adapt is to enable polychord notation, triad on top of a triad, and or triad over a four note chord. It gets close with the chord over base note. But as far as finding chords that aren't quote dull, unquote, what can you be looking for other than some triadic/quartal shape, or inversion of one, over a base note, or interval?

As an old foggie, I think they've got what I need covered, until I get a film score assignment. But I would like to know more about what people are hunting for asking for more "modern chord sounds".

Hello HunterGatherer,

I'm not sure where "dull chord sounds" comes from. I have no complaints about BIAB's range of chords - that's its greatest strength for me. I have commented on what I regard as the dull chord progressions of backing tracks sold for the purpose of toplining. These are fixed chord progressions with modern sounding arrangements (nothing to do with what PG offers). They are sold on websites with the intention of making themselves as widely usable as possible so the progressions are often bland. I've written songs to some of them and found it frustrating because of the inability to choose your own chords. One song I had to write to a backing track had only two chords in the whole song.

I started this thread because BIAB's EXCELLENT feature of being able to choose any chords you want could solve the problem of the chord straitjacket of these tracks sold for toplining... IF BIAB could add some styles that really do sound like mainstream contemporary pop songs.

So the discussion of styles/sounds is separate from chords. I hope that clarifies what I'm asking for.

Just a note some may find interest in of a short song I posted onto the Users Showcase today based on my reading and understanding of techniques presented by Austin Hull of the Make Pop Music website and YouTube videos and also from various opinions voiced in this forum discussion.

The song was composed only using BIAB styles, RealTrack instruments and Midi instruments. The arrangement and production was completed solely in BIAB.

It ended up with five sections, 17 tracks, 12 instruments, 3 Styles, 5 Real Synth Pads and a repeating chord progression.
Other instrumentation is one RT Bass, one RT Piano with held chords, Acoustic Guitar and three RealDrums tracks. There were also 4 tracks of PG Music special RealTrack 1152, Silence that is used for programming purposes by the BIAB algorithm.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
