I am trying to help our good friend Don Gaynor with his videos. He would like me to cut out some areas and do some work with the audio, things like adjusting the tone, volume, and maybe add a little compression.
I am a total rookie when it comes to video. The free programs I have tried will let me cut up the video but not allow me to do anything with the audio. By anything I mean work with the video's audio, I can add audio tracks to the video but that is not what I want to do.
Does anyone know of a free program that will allow me to do the above? Don mentioned Davinci but for some reason I can not DL it.
I tried my Studio One Pro 5 but I couldn't get it to work with the video's audio either.
I hear Windows had a program that might work but it has been discontinued.
Thanx in advance for your time.
My momma didn't raise a fool. And if she did it, was one of my brothers.

Mario,
Don PM'd me about me about this and I told him that I knew absolutely nothing about editing video. I appreciate you taking on the task and I truly hope someone can help you with this.
Don Gaynor is one of the most beloved members on this forum and I hope some of the folks who know something about this will give Mario a hand.

And thanks for helping Don.

HI All
I am afraid you are not going to have much luck with this. If the audio is already embedded in the video you can then only edit as one composite clip. As would be the case in a series of clips from a camcorder.
As you say some not all, video editors allow you to overlay a separate sound track as merged or as replacement for the original sound the video will then need to be re rendered to embed this extra sound. The separate sound track can often have simple edits such as fade in and out and cross fading imposed. Whilst you can work on the track this way What you wont find are any ways of say stretching or shortening the sound and applying the necessary pitch changing to keep in tune.
In this respect the most you can do, if you have a separate sound track to work on is cut the video into shorter clips and trim or stretch the video clip to match the length of the Audio. The eye as fare more tolerant than the ear, I use this method sometimes to get scene changes on the beat. Even this job is far easier if the video is a series of stills and not rolling action. But cross faded sound over video cross faded transition can be very effective.
Just my thoughts Mike

Ok... The way I would do this is.... Get Cakewalk, it allows for video import (not sure if you can actually edit video there) It will create audio in separate track. I would edit that audio / insert FX and export that video with edited audio. Another way is.... Follow Cakewalk steps, but export just audio.
In your video editor (one open source editor I tried is Shotcut) Import your original video with original audio. Create new audio track. Import that mp3 exported from Cakewalk. Position match to original audio, mute original audio. Slice and cut your video. Export.

I'd personally suggest Davinci, as it allows you to edit audio and video either simultaneously or separately, including loading up plugins and just about anything you can do in a DAW. If you can't download the current version, perhaps see if there's an older version you can find. I've used it since version 14 and it's been great.

Late last night I was able to DL Davinci. It was funny that Firefox would put me in a loop so I couldn't DL it but Brave let me. Browsers can be funny creatures.

Hello Mario, I have used "Camtasia Studio" in the past for a little bit of video / audio recording. This is not free but it has a lot of high end features. I can recommend "OBS Studio" which is very popular and then also "Debut Video Capture". Both are free.
As suggested by others, Reaper can do the audio polish if needed and Camtasia allows inserting of audio to synch with video. If I can help with anything just PM me. I have some time these days. Dan

Hi Mario, A simple and effective video editor is VideoPad by NCH which is free for non commercial use. Any video imported will be placed on the video track and the audio extracted and placed on the audio track. The audio can then be un-linked from the video with a right click command, then the audio can be split cut moved etc and effects added if needed.

Da Vinci is definitely the editor to use. Glad that you finally managed to get it downloaded.
The program has a learning curve... but it is not overwhelming difficult to use. Will

Whatever the software, you simply need to be able to separate the audio from the video track. Most above-minimum video editors should allow you to do that. In mine (cyberlink), I can actually render the video as an audio file. (of course, there's no video info in that file). Then take the audio to your DAW and do what your need to do with it. Render it out as a .wav.
Take the improved audio and re-couple it with the video. This can be done as simply as muting the original audio and placing it on a separate audio track in your video editor. Once it's there, you can do your edits. I take it you mean cutting out certain parts of the final product to make it more watchable and flow better.
I think if you do it this way, you'll be less encumbered with new software. In any case, in ANY "video" multimedia file, there is a VIDEO component and an AUDIO component. There's no real need to try to work with both at the same time, imo. Once the audio is fixed, and replaced, it will ride along with any edits you make to the ENTIRE multimedia.

I also use video pad as described. I think after a while it becomes no longer free so i purchased it. Don asked me to help with this but I found the size of the files impossible to work with.

Yes, I am using video pad. If I have to purchase it to help Don then I will. I have no problem with the file size. I am using the free minitool utube downloader to get the files: https://youtubedownload.minitool.com/
