With some great help from Simon I got BIAB/RB setup on the new laptop. Installed all original setup and extra files back to 2017, my last full install purchase before buying updated files since then. All is working well except the PG canned harmony parts on the Thru track in BIAB.
All of the harmony parts work fine on the Melody track but only the lead melody part of the canned PG harmony parts can be heard on the Thru track. Volume, pan and reverb all adjust as normal on the Thru track.
Have gone back to compare setups on the desktop install and all works fine there on the Thru track.
Don't know if I missed loading a file, have a MIDI configuration issue or other problem. All other functions work fine, it's just this harmony issue on the Thru track.
Anybody got any insight into how the canned harmonies actually work and where I might have a problem?
Do your desktop and laptop computer have the same Windows audio configuration? I'm wondering if the harmony parts you're missing are generated using the Windows MIDI soft synth instead of the Band-in-a-Box MIDI soft synth. If so, your laptop Windows audio mixer may have a playback channel muted or the playback level turned down.
I open my Windows 10 Sound Control Panel by right clicking on the task bar speaker icon and selecting "Open Sound Settings". You can also access it by going through the Windows 10 Control Panel.
Hi Jim, thanks for responding. You're right: Repeat: Soloist and THRU have no MIDI events.
You have to have a midi keyboard or other MIDI device setup on the Thru track and play the melody there. Mute the melody in the Melody track and play the melody that you'll find when you open the Lead sheet. Playing the melody on the thru track triggers the harmonies on the soloist track. Nothing plays on the Thru track, it's all on the soloist track. I can't remember if this was always the case or not.
OK, just got back from a conversation with PG's Simon. It seems that's the way the program works. If you use the "canned" harmonies from PG on the Thru track, when you play your keyboard or other midi equipment, the sound will come from the Soloist track and its volume will be indicated there on the slider. No sound or volume indication will be seen on the thru track.
So for me that means that I cannot use midi harmonies on the thru track and have a RT solo on the soloist track. As Simon pointed out, we could put the solo on one of the Utility tracks after your satisfied with its generation.
Hi again Jeff, I dug a bit deeper, and it seems that when there's something on the soloist track, BB uses the Thru track for the thru harmonies. Can you check if that works for you? I'm on beta build 833, which you should have.
It’s my thinking that harmony on the thru track cant generate until you play a note on the thru track. As BIAB has no way of knowing what note you will play next on you keyboard, I don’t see how it could lay harmony in advance. Unless there is some way it can base the harmony on say another track Then again there is no telling what you might want to play on the Thru track it could be the bass part or a melody.
Strangely, when I direct BIAB to use a VSTi/ DXi synth, for example the TTS-1, everything work as you indicated. The harmonies play on the Thru track with you have a RT solo on the soloist track.
When I stop using the TTS-1 on the Thru track and switch back to the external Motif XS Rack, that's where the problem seems to be. Then if I leave the RT solo in place, I get no sound on the Thru track if harmonies are in effect. If I set the harmonies in BIAB to "None" then the Motif and the Thru track sound OK.
So it seems that I have an internal routing config issue and that this is not a BIAB issue. I can live with the moving the Solo track to a Utility track and freeing up the Soloist track for use with the Motif and internal PG harmonies.
You're very welcome Jeff. I think this may have been intentional at some time long ago, but I'm not sure if it needs to be this way anymore. Either way, I've reported this to the dev team.
