I'm aware of the many USB and Firewire interfaces to get audio inputs into the computer. Will they operate in the opposite direction simply for playback of BIAB? What I mean is this----can a USB unit be used to get the audio from the laptop, e.g. Forte synth, to the sound system for live work? I'd like to get away from those mini plug outputs that are fragile and always getting bumped, since they are placed in the very front of the laptop. USB seems a little stronger and are located on the sides and back. I'm sure this appears as a dumb question to the more experienced, but I really don't know how these things work.

Yes, of course! Your USB Audio Interface ("AI") works just like the Sound Card in your PC -- you can use it both to INPUT (say a guitar) and OUTPUT (say sound to your speakers) or anything else you want...
I have a Mixer attached into which I have a Microphone and a guitar amp plugged, I use it to record on RB or BIAB. The sound from the BIAB or RB comes out through the USB AI, then out into a new channel on the Mixer... which has the speakers attaced to it. Mind you my mixer has a sub/Alt 3-4 which is where I send the Mic and guitar channels to, then out to the AI... ) If you don't have a mixer just attach the speakers to your AI. Make sure you choose/specify this AI inside your BIAB settings so it knows where to send the sound output to.

Yes, you can use a USB-device. I am using the Edirol UA-20 USB interface with Biab and it works flawlessly.

J., Everything from a couple of bucks, to a couple of thousand dollars!  PG Music is now selling the Cakewalk UA-1G, I think, which is a very nice little USB Audio Interface based on the old Roland UA-1X. I'm actually thinking about getting one of those for my laptop so I can hook my mixer up to it and have multiple mic inputs. For $100, you really can't go wrong here. It will record in and play back two channels of audio. It also has digital ins and outs, if you have a digital device you wish to connect to it (optical connection via a 3.5mm adapter). I use a Behringer UCA200 USB audio interface in my studio and a Xitel HiFi Link (which is now marketed as their MP3 Streamer.) Both products work very well with BIAB on both my laptop and desktop systems. The quality improvement is very significant on the laptop, reducing the phasing distortion caused by the headphone jack.
