Hope this is the right place for this question, new to the forum hello hello! <3 I looking for a cheap card reader to use for busking. the important feature I'm looking for is repeat payments. Repeat payments would let me accept payments for one fixed amount repeatedly. Allowing take multiple tips at the same set amount without the need to keep on pressing buttons between tips. A useful feature for busking. I brough the Zettle reader for this feature, but the feature only works on IoS and I have an android device also I'm in the UK. Thanks very much for any input!

Firstly, I admit to being completely unfamiliar with what you are looking for, however, it may be similar to those musicians who perform on a streaming service named StreetJelly Perhaps you might find a solution from that site?

So, you actually walk around after a busking set with a credit card reader for tips? And people actually hand you their credit cards for you to swipe? Regards, Bob

The way Street Jelly ( streetjelly.com ) works is: Viewers/listeners buy tokens and award them to the performer during the show or later during the REPLAY.Tokens are purchased in several denominations. I believe that the larger packages are about US$100. Once a month your tokens are paid out to the performer's PayPal account. Several artists do quite well on Streetjelly. You won't get rich but you'll meet many talented artists in a familylike environment. Just visit the site to see how it all works. www.streetjelly.comhttps://www.streetjelly.com/buytokens

...Repeat payments would let me accept payments for one fixed amount repeatedly. Allowing take multiple tips at the same set amount without the need to keep on pressing buttons between tips... Yes, I imagine it must be a terrible inconvenience to have to press any buttons just to get tipped multiple times from the one card. Quite inconvenient, actually...

Thanks for the suggestions,
To explain my situation I'm looking to do a magic show once covid has died down. So I'll gather a crowd and then hopefully at the end I'll have a number of people coming up and throwing money in my hat, which takes just a second. now crowds are becoming cashless, having a large audience having to queue up as I slowly process donations manually would really slow things down, and even put people off.
So having a touchless card reader that charges them £3 a pop would be really handy so people can come up, tap and go. Also parents could give the card to their children to swipe for them.
It's just a shame we're loseing the simplicity of throwing money in a hat.

Thanks for the question Bob. Most transactions here are done touchless, using a card or a phone to hold over the top of the card reader rather than having to insert the card or enter pin codes. At least for small amounts under about $40.
It's quick and easy and given covid it's safer and a lot less off-putting than a line of people who all have to touch the same device. Many places here no longer accept cash so many people just don't carry it so for a busker here it's a big concern.

<...snip...>
It's just a shame we're loseing the simplicity of throwing money in a hat. I agree. Although I've never busked, when traveling to places where there are buskers, I always carry a little cash to make a contribution. It just seems like the kind thing to do. The only time I do not tip a street musician, is if they are playing at too high a volume. If the performer is busking at over about 85db, he/she is potentially permanently damaging the hearing of the people passing by, and that is not a kind thing to do. When Mrs. Notes and I gig, we do a sound check and keep the volume to 85db ("A" weighted, slow response) at the closest table to the band in order to protect the hearing of our audience. As professionals, we don't feel that we have the right to damage the ears of our audience. If they ask us to turn up, we will, but it becomes their choice, not ours. But that's besides the point. I would not swipe or tap my credit card to tip a street musician, but I can see where others would. I don't have any payment apps on my cell phone either. I'm not a Luddite, but I figure if I lose my phone, it's too easy to lose a lot of money too. But I will make sure to have a little cash on me to tip the buskers, because they need to eat too. I think it's the way of the future and a really interesting concept. We have machines that are swiped everywhere. Maybe I'll get one for my live shows - if we ever have any! In Hong Kong, people use cards to pay for everyday stuff all the time. Everyone has one. Buses, shops, the MTR (underground/metro) and even some taxis all use Octopus cards. Cards are used to buy stuff from newsagents/supermarkets (7/11 shops etc. as well). You can add cash easily and we can swipe pretty much anywhere to purchase stuff. Also true of credit cards. They can be swiped anywhere major. China uses vast amounts of cashless cards. I actually take coins out of my trousers and we keep them in a jar which we can take to a van to get converted (by weight) into notes. The $1000 HK note has virtually vanished as there was a run of fake notes in circulation a couple of years back and shops didn't want to accept them.
Interesting side note. The HK government is giving every one $5000 HK in electronic vouchers to help kick start the economy. The main route is Octopus Cards, Alipay etc. They've had to alter the cards so people can't convert the vouchers into cash and bank it. People in Hong Kong are big savers! Ironically, the supermarkets are owned by some of the richest people in the world and have not been affected by Covid issues and they'll get most of the benefit. The 1st round they gave $5000 cash which was better for the poor. ($5000 HK is about $650 US)

Mogz. I'm in the same boat but I use the sum up card.as you say it's a problem having to reset the payment evertime. I busk with my sax and it's 95% passing trade as I'm playing but once the card readers been used it needs resetting ,not convenient at all. Zettle have said they are bringing a repeat payment app out but it didn't say if it was for apple or android, apple is already available as you said. All the other methods on the busking sites say the tipper has to visit a website or similar to donate which all takes time.nick from Busk.co.uk have tried to work something out. As you say the repeat payment option is the only one that is practical. I'll keep my eye on this post hoping something comes up.
