Hi All
I was somewhat shocked to see that we can still not bring a midi file into BIAB as 16 independent midi channels and spread it across the BIAB tracks and new utility tracks. I know, go to RealBand or just do it in Reaper. But why? Am I missing something? It seems like it should be really easy.

It seems like it should be really easy. It is. Here's the steps: . Import a Midi file . Use the sequencer to determine the channels . Check in options to determine the BIAB defaults for midi patches . Use the command Edit\Copy Special..\Copy/Move to select the midi patches, source track and destination track Just follow the menu prompts and it just takes a minute or so to set up the tracks. I just tested it on my system and everything worked fine. Be sure to freeze the tracks to preserve the midi notes or BIAB will overwrite them when you generate. Here's a video tutorial by Forum member Henry Clarke. How to Import "Midi Files" in BIAB

just a quick question - why do you want to import a midi file to BIAB rather than RB or Reaper? i'm always ready to learn so what functionality do you get that RB doesn't give you or the BIAB plugin in Reaper?

Bob, The user may not use Reaper. For example my DAW of choice is Cakewalk by Bandlab. However, I'm slowly learning much of what I can do in my DAW I can as easily and quickly do in Band-in-a-Box. The user may have a Mac computer and not have access to RealBand since RealBand is Windows only. The user may want to use Band-in-a-Box resources such as the Melodist, Soloist or MIDI chord detection. The latest Groove3 Band-in-a-Box video tutorial series, +++ Songwriting with Band-in-a-Box +++ demonstrates features in Band-in-a-Box that I've never examined. I'm learning there is a lot that can be done "in the box" so to speak. I'll be very happy when Groove3 releases the tutorial using the Windows BiaB instead of the Mac.

just a quick question - why do you want to import a midi file to BIAB rather than RB or Reaper? i'm always ready to learn so what functionality do you get that RB doesn't give you or the BIAB plugin in Reaper? As Jim mentioned, both the BIAB Plug-in and RealBand lack much of the Stand-alone version's functionality. In another thread of the Forum, I posted two attachments of a PG Music MultiStyle Demo, one version playing the Demo generated by BIAB and the second, generated by RealBand. The RealBand version loads the style demo SGU perfectly and uses the base style instruments, Chords, tempo and key. Beyond that, RealBand ignores all of the additional editing and internal programming that staff developers built into that MultiStyle and reverts all of the custom Part Markers to normal A and B style Part Markers. My BIAB 2021 has nearly 1,000 MultiStyles included in the StylePicker. Opening any of those styles in RealBand negates the MultiStyle feature and the style is recognized and plays as a normal style. There is a radical difference between the two samples of the demo. Here's a link to my post and the attachments if you want to hear the difference. https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=665361#Post665361There are many other features and tools similar to this example with many of them being Midi based tools that the BIAB Plug-in and RealBand lack the full functionality of BIAB.

Pipeline, Very excellent. This really does show the process succinctly. Thanks.

Hi All
Thank you for the attention my post received. Gotta love this forum. I stand corrected Charlie. I hadn't completed all the steps in the import process. I'm just getting around to trying out the new features of 2021. Pipeline, as always inspired! Bob, I probably wouldn't use it except that I have written all my backing tracks in BIAB up to now. Perhaps not for editing midi though? Again Charlie, very true that there are some amazing tools hidden away in BIAB that could be used alongside midi, however generated. Stay safe everyone.
