Hi, all: I'm going to be doing some gigs with just me (clarinet, flute, maybe some soprano sax) along with BIAB accompaniment. As I've never done this before, I'm looking for suggestions for tunes that people think would work. I'll be playing in a restaurant setting. All instrumental, no vocals. I will of course be doing standards like Ellington tunes (Take the A Train, Don't Get Around Much Anymore, Satin Doll, It Don't Mean a Thing), Misty, maybe some dixie style stuff (Bill Bailey, Saints), and Take 5 and All Blues. I'd appreciate any other suggestions folks here have. I'll be doing just piano/guitar/bass/drums, with maybe an occasional Real Tracks solo. Thank you all very much.

Hi Marc, It's been a long time since I've done any restaurant gigs, but may I suggest a little light latin. Perhaps Petite Fleur (great on either clari or flute) Amapola, Spanish Eyes etc. And remember, most 4/4 songs can be played with a beguine feel - For the Good Times, I Wish you Love, Sunny etc. In restaurants, people don't always LISTEN to the music but they HEAR it; it's a bit subliminal. When people comment on the atmosphere of a restaurant, it's generally related to the "mood lighting" and the music, although neither are "in their faces" Hope this helps, and good luck with the gig.
Cheers, Keith

For this type of gig, I second the latin stuff. Do a Jobim songbook. I used to do a medley of different bossa's and just kept on going as long as I felt like it. Things like Ipanema, Watch What Happens, Wave, Triste, Lucky Southern, Dingi, Song For My Father, Forrest Flower, Blue Bossa, Black Orpheus, Corcovado, Agua de Beber and more I can't think of right now. Something you can stretch out on is Night in Tunisia, it doesn't have to be the smokin tour de force most cats play, its works great as a medium tempo quiet bossa too. There's always a few in the audience who think wow, he's a real jazz player if you do that one. Most of these are in the Biab Real Book One that you can find with a simple Google search and the other's should be on Allanah's site. Actually Google Band in a Box fake books, there's a few sites that have huge collections.

Keith and Bob: Thank you guys, those are great suggestions! I'll definitely work in the Jobim tunes, and the beguine approach to things as Keith suggested.
If there are any other suggestions I'd be glad to hear them!

I am still not sure at what type of restaurant you will be performing. I see you hail from the Southwest that could open another song book or two depending on the type of the restaurant (white, checkered or no table cloth) and the food served. Hey before the night is over you may be playing some Bob Wills partner. And if you are in Texas I would have every song ever written about Texas in my book somewhere. Without knowing I would be sure to have a lot of lite jazz (I see you mentioned already) but would also include pop standards i.e. the likes of Dean, Frank, Tony and Nat just to be sure. But the latin suggentions offered above are right on as I will assume it will be a high end white table cloth establishment. Break a leg!

Danny: Good point-I should have said that it is a higher end kind of place expecting jazz and standards and pop type stuff. I recently saw Asleep At the Wheel, and they had a sax/clarinet player, but I still just can't get my head around "country clarinet" as a solo act! Thank you for the suggestions.

How about "My wife left me, My horse died, and the dawg ate my Clari." It's a famous song.

I have a friend who's a sax ballad specialist. Stuff like Embraceable You, Yesterdays, April In New York, Days of Wine & Roses, As Time Goes By, What a Wonderful World, Angel Eyes, Europa, Masquerade, My Funny Valentine, etc. He plays a lot of held whole tones with a ton of soul and older audiences eat it up. He does these at what he calls New Orleans funeral march tempo, slooow. I do some of these with other bands and they're usually up tempo especially Wine & Roses and Masquerade but with him they're strictly ballads and they go over great in a restaurant. I will occasionally get called for a solo piano gig and will do these same tunes and they're great for that too. They're quiet, melodic classic songs. I think with this group, the latin ones and you're Ellington and Rat Pack tunes, you've got your gig covered. This is pretty much a standard high class restaurant song list anywhere in the western world.

SaxMarc: I'm doing exactly what you're planning to do, except I'm on guitar with vocals. All the suggestions provided are excellent for that type environment. I'd recommend the American songbook variety, with a sprinking of easy country and pop tunes through about the 70's and 80's. Include a few movie and TV sitcom themes as well. I even get away with the western swing thing, since that's one of my favorite styles. My gig is the white table cloth routine in a university town with private membership. BIAB works great for the solo artist. I have guest vocalists and instrumentalists who often join me and they all can't say enough good stuff about BIAB. So far it's never failed on a gig. If that happened, I'd pull-out the mp3 player.

Keith: What were the changes for that tune??? (Oh yeah, it is a country tune, right?)

J. Larry: Thanks for the comments. So you use BIAB directly on the gig and not just using an .mp3 player or something? I know there are a lot of posts about which way to go on that. I'm still trying to decide which is the better way to go.

Marc: Yes, I play directly from the BIAB program on a laptop. Works good for my situation. I've used mp3's, CDs, mini discs, old cassette tapes---everything. But, I like seeing the chord changes in real time and the scrolling lyrics that BIAB provides. Beats the heck out carrying fake books, music stand and all the rest. Sometimes I plan ahead and set up play lists for the Jukebox. However, most of the time I select tunes from folders of songs, or play requests. The down time between songs is not long at all, which is not a factor when people are dining.

Sounds like you are playing my gig man. It's just what I do for just about every gig.

Larry and Danny: Thank you very much for the feedback. Now if I can just solve the access violation errors with BIAB 2010, I'll be in good shape!
