G'day all,
I thought I'd follow Don's lead here.

The boss, err, I mean, the child bride, err, make that my wonderful wife and I have just notched up 30 years today (5th of January)

She is the light of my life and I thank God for her everyday. I cannot, and do not want to, imagine life without her.

lawrie,
so happy for you and the wee missus me bucko. like you, i can't imagine life without her but the strain of taking care of me is having its physical and emotional toll on her and that simply breaks my heart. we hope to make it to the 'big five 0' but with our health issues, who can say? we try to be content with one day at a time and constantly reassure each other of our love. we have always applied the bible's council: 'never let the sun set with you in a provoked state...' and it has kept us going through difficult moments that creep into any marriage. i treasure her and make her know it as i'm sure you do your wife. that, in a nutshell, is my secret to a long and happy marriage. don't let a day go by that you don't reassure her of your devotion. like the garth brooks song that joanne and i both love: 'if tomorrow never comes.'

Thanks Don,
wise words which we do also live by.

Of course, after so many years yourself I'm sure you know the secret to a long and happy marriage lies in 2 simple words:
"Yes dear"

As for No. 50, well, I'd like to remind you of Heb. 11:1 Operating in faith takes practice, just like any muscle needs exercise. I'm sure I don't need to tell you, of all people, this, but sometimes a little reminder can set one thinking along new lines of possibility. The evidence of ones eyes is not always consistent with truth, in the natural world as well as the spiritual, especially the spiritual, which can have profound effect on the natural...

Thanks for the link too, kinda says it all don't it.

Thanks everybody for your good wishes. We honestly don't know where the time has gone - three great kids and a good life - we're really blessed and grateful for it.

G'day Ricke,
Thank you!. We had planned on a dinner and a movie, but my lady had a malady and didn't feel like going out. So we ordered some Indian food home delivered and watched a DVD - pretty tame really, but it suited us.

At the end of the day, we just plain like being together. It doesn't really matter what the surroundings are, if we're together we're happy.

Congratulations, L. This year woulda been my 30th, if the ex-missus hadn't decided to call the thing off nine years ago. I truly respect the effort that goes into making a relationship work over time. Anybody can call it quits. It takes determination and integrity on both parts to go on as you have.

All the best,

Richard

Thank you Richard.

You're right about the effort, and it takes patience too. My wife has been amazingly patient with me through some emotional turmoil I went through for several years - I didn't even realise just how hard to get along with I was being. Thank God He got me straightened out - or at least on the path...

That said, it's worked both ways. There have been times that she has had a rough time and I've had to be patient. But it's important to remember that it isn't a competition - we're supposed to be there for each other.

I recently saw an interview with Dick Van Dyke, and though he was talking about his show, it really related to how we, and I believe all married couples, should live.

It seems the comedies of the day always had to have a battle of the sexes going on, you know, him against her and vice versa, whereas in the show he and Mary Tyler Moore were together against the world so to speak. Rather than being at odds with each other, they were back to back supporting each other. That's how we choose to live. A partnership, not a contest.

We're looking forward to the rest of our lives together.

THAT is beautiful, Lawrie

I, unfortunately, seem to have a habit of getting involved with 'waifs and strays' and setting them on the path to self-fulfilment. I love them, I motivate them and they move on their way. Unfortunately, they don't stick around for too long. Still, I hope that being involved with me has made their lives richer and has helped them find their true paths. I have had my heart broken more times than I care to mention.

OTOH, to take a more cynical look at my love life, there have been those who have thought me the devil incarnate...

So, without further adue...

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the Blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
(woo woo, woo woo)

I shouted out,
"Who killed the Kennedys?"
When after all
It was you and me
(who who, who who)

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
(woo woo, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
(who who, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
(woo woo, who who)

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
(who who, who who)

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, have some taste
(woo woo)
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mmm yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, mmm yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mmm mean it, get down
(woo woo, woo woo)

Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
(woo woo)

Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame

Oh, who
woo, woo
Woo, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name

Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Woo woo
Woo woo

Oh boy! Is that LIFE???

G'day Sam,
thank you.

I know a man, I don't want to identify him too closely, who also would pick up strays so to speak. He actually ended up marrying one and though he was faithful the marriage was ultimately a disaster - they lasted 20 years before he finally divorced her. I wouldn't have lasted a year. They were just plain wrong for each other.

There was no intellectual match, no emotional match, no shared responsibility, no maturity match... and so on...

I mention this to say, if you truly want a life partner, find a match, not a "bird with a broken wing". Find someone who is already what you want in a wife, not someone you think you can mould into that role... The old saying "a leopard can't change his spots" is most apropos

And remember, she won't be perfect (well, lets face it, neither are you ) so don't expect her to be. It is said that love is blind, I agree, but it is selectively blind - by choice, just be aware that you are making that choice so that it doesn't blind you.
