Which is usually the right choice?
mme
asio
was

I usually choose ASIO in other music software
My sound card is focusrite and also supports ASIO
However, I found that my default is Mme
So which is the right choice? What do they represent?
thank you

If you don’t record in BIAB, you can use MME. You can also try WAS although I was never able to get that to work when I used Focusrite interfaces.

ASIO is (mostly/usually) limited to one digital audio program at a time. Use it for your DAW.

Sure, there’s a lot more to understanding this. But that’s the bottom line.

BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Slate VSX, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

Thank you for your reply. I don't record in BIAB. I prefer to use studio one
But what does "WAS" mean? This is the first time I've seen this.

Is “MME” a driver only belonging to band in a box?

WAS = Windows Audio Service.

MME = is an abbreviation for MultiMedia Extension, a driver for the Windows operating system that enables certain audio or video functions. It is not a driver developed specifically for use by BiaB.

Sorry; I had assumed you would first Google the definitions and wanted more practical advice. A little more:

WAS was defined above and API just means application programming interface. WASAPI is WAS for short.

MME is much older than WAS and I have always used MME.

ASIO is a standard that vendors use to develop drivers for their own equipment. It should work fine unless you also have a DAW or other Windows digital audio program open at the same time as BIAB. I knew you had Studio One.

You can try switching drivers, but you will probably encounter timing issues between audio and MIDI that must be adjusted in BIAB.

I have ASIO for my DAW, Studio One Pro 5, and MME for BiaB. This way I can have both BiaB and my DAW running simultaneously. The is the best workflow for me. YMMV

PS - Note that I never record in BiaB. I always record in my DAW. Recording most always requires ASIO drivers.

I'm not allowed to access Google or YouTube. I need to use a special method. It's very slow to open and can't open...

ASIO is typically used if you are using an audio interface. Most audio interface brands that work well with Band-in-a-Box provide their own ASIO drivers to install. Otherwise, two generic ASIO drivers that have worked with Band-in-a-Box in the past are ASIO4ALL and FlexASIO.

ASIO is a hardware specific driver provided by the audio interface manufacturer. WAS and MME are generic audio driver applications provided by Microsoft Windows. MME was the only Windows audio driver from Windows 95 to Windows XP. The WAS application was added in Windows Vista and is also in Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10.

ASIO4ALL is an audio driver that makes MME appear as ASIO to a DAW. Most DAW developers don't like ASIO4ALL because it can create problems.

Microsoft created MME in Windows to support computer audio cards and CD-ROM audio. WAS adds the capability to handle multiple audio streams at one time.

Can you access Wikipedia? Here is an article about MME: +++ Wikipedia MME Article +++

+++ HERE +++ is a short article about WAS or WASPI.

I normally use MME in BiaB, and rarely need to change that setting.

Jim gave a good quick history, but as it relates to BIAB, the WAS driver wasn’t a choice for us until just a couple of years ago.

Set your BIAB to MME, make sure the timing between MIDI and audio is aligned by using the utility in the MIDI Driver options, and then leave it.
