...and can easily do it from other views (for example, from the piano roll editor, as you can see in the attached video), but I simply can't find a way to do that from the audio edit window.
(I know that you can loop bars using the "loop selected area", but I just want to be able to play and stop the music without making any selections previously.

In the Audio Editor Window, anywhere you place the red curser and hit the Space Bar will start play from the curser.
Yes, I've just left my +1 to your reasonable FR. But I have not yet been able to make it work in minimalistic mode!
I haven't used BIAB for a couple of years, and I'm re-learning a lot of things now. Yes, sometimes it's not the most intuitive program of the world, but I have to say that the new (to me) feature browser is a great help.
