Do you think some artist performances are so strong they make a song that wouldn't otherwise be popular, popular? Or that sometimes a song is so good that it would be popular regardless of the artist?

Absolutely.

My favorite example is "Tutti Frutti". If you listen to Little Richard's version, it's pure magic.
Then go listen to the Pat Boone version.....

I kinda feel like, in the past, it was the record companies and radio stations that made the songs popular. They would choose what they considered the best (or most likely to catch on) and then they would play them over and over and over until they became earworms.

I don't know but I have always found it interesting that how the Rolling Stones were labeled the bad boys (to the Beatles good guys) and then when they started writing their own songs they actually were able to write to their image. That's pretty amazing. I think most artists form their image around the songs they write or are given.

What a thought provoking question. I suppose both senarios can be true.

It may entirely explain the phenomenon of the one hit wonder.

Yes.

My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

The music business has been turned upside down. I am sure many companies employ people to just "like" videos, instagram, facebook, twitter, spotify you name it. Just like the old days but you don't have to go to the DJ's and pay em off.

In general, I think it is both and sometimes neither. There are of course exceptions to everything. Some things are totally illogical. For example...

Who is PSY? A little hint...Najeneun ddasarowun in-ganjeogin yeoja
Keopi hanjaneui yeoyureul aneun pumgyeok ittneun yeoja
Bami omyeon shimjangi ddeugeowojineun yeoja
Geureon banjeon ittneun yeoja

Marketing is likely the biggest single factor. We drink Coke because we are told to drink Coke. When advertising budgets for The Coca-Cola Company were cut sales dropped by large percentages.

Who is Billy Ray Cyrus and how did "Achy Breaky Heart" become a hit? Ask Mercury Records how many millions they spent promoting the line dance and record.

Timing is a major factor. If The Chordettes were to be a new group today, would "Mr Sandman" be a hit?

It is not "kids" who buy music. It is sold to older people. Here is a pretty good article that will give you an idea of who is buying music.

https://spinditty.com/industry/Who-is-Buying-the-Most-Music-Its-Not-Who-You-Think

So...the answer to the question can not be answered by a single yes or no.

Billy

“Amazing! I’ll be working with Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, and Buddy Rich, and you’re telling me it’s not that great of a gig?
“Well…” Saint Peter, hesitated, “God’s got this girlfriend who thinks she can sing…”

In the past you needed a contract with a record company and promotion, and over time you could earn enough street credit to sell solely on your b(r)and name.

Today you pay a distributor for getting your music public available, but to get heard you still need marketing/promotion to stand out from theist amount of music just waiting to be heard. If you're an already established b(r)and - your way to do well commercially is more likely to happen.

Essentially you are more prone to get a lot of streams/getting A rotation if you're well established. To stay on top you need to publish songs with a certain quality or have a back catalogue that keep your star shining forever.

Does this mean that all good songs are purely written by top 100 artists or their song writer teams?
-It all comes down to taste

I've heard a lot of songs from members of this forum with very high quality, but very few (if any) became hits. I think promotion has been and always will be the keyword.

*Disclaimer - the above post is not me mourning about lack of commercial success*
