I think it would be nice if users would enter location when setting up their account.
There should be nothing to be afraid of ..., I think.
No need to detail it down to street address, country is sufficient and just a fun indication of being part of a bigger community.
It also helps understanding any language barriers.

Ember, you may not realize there was a map for user locations on this site. I think it was twenty or more years ago. It was one of those 'drop a pin' maps of the world. From that, I learned who the closest users to me were, including MarioD and a couple of users in New York City. As you might expect, certain cities became so clustered that it was hard to differentiate, but we thought it was fun. I do not remember why it was dropped from the site, but there were fewer privacy concerns in those days.
Now, you could just make a page with Google Maps.

I think Australians in particular are very aware of timezones with the rest of the anglophone world. In much of Europe we have just one time zone (in Britain we're one hour behind most of Europe, the Balkans one hour ahead), so between us, we're hardly aware of the difference. I think lots of Europeans forget. I've been using email since the early 80s and have long been used to it, but still forget occasionally.

Pity Russia with 11 time zones! Almost half a day difference between east and west.
Believe it or not, all the China mainland uses the same time zone even though the land mass extends through 5 geographic time zones.
I use to live close to a time zone division. Two television stations were in one time zone while a third was in the other time zone. Some stores were in one and others in the other. You always had to be cognizant of "local" time.
My work offered telephone support across five time zones, Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaskan and Hawaiian. I got to where I could easily switch between zones while talking to someone.
