I use a nanoKontrol2 with Reaper. While it is great, it is not without its many limitations. So I wanted to suppliment it. I have been looking a long time and not able to find simple sliders to control VSTi libraries at a reasonable price. Until now.
Any one have experience with this little piece of gear?
Mario, that looks a lot like my nanoKontrol2. Can't tell you how much time I have put into comprehending and configuring the nanoKontrol for Reaper. And now that I have spent the time to Master the nano, I find I need more.
The Nano has essentially two modes of operation - 1) Mackie Control (DAW Modes). In the case of Reaper, the control is pretty good (~ 80% effective for contolling typical track features). But this leave little to no control over external VSTi.
2) CC-controlled (VSTi mode). This requires coding of each and every button, knob and slider to an action. This can handle all controls for VSTi parameters, but then is a bit limited in what it can do to control Reaper.
Only one mode can be functional at a time. I currently run with Mode 2. But I want to run in Mode 1. If I buy the sliders I can do that.
Well, I am pretty sure I can. Enough to already have this item on the way.
One issue with buying duplicates of any USB device is both devices may use the same device ID. The device ID is what Microsoft Windows uses to keep track of multiple devices communicating with a computer.
At one time a complaint about the nanoKontrol2 was all used the same device ID. Korg stated they may issue firmware and nanoKontrol2 Editor updates so a Device ID can be set by the user. I don't know if that has been accomplished yet.
As an aside, love the updated Avatar. Sharp looking shirt!
Not planning on duplicating the Nano. Just keeping the one I got and fully dedicating all controls to Reaper opereration. Then adding the Sparrow 3x100mm MIDI controller to work with the VSTi libraries. Now if that causes a conflict, I will just chalk it up to the cost of doing business. One of the items will end up in the closet.
I use this to control Logic. My main use is with the Spitfire Audio libraries as you can set any of the controls to do whatever you want. Its not cheap but is build like a tank, has a good throw on the sliders, which feel very smooth. Unlike the nanokontrol 2 I do not get drop outs.
Out of the box it will detect your DAW and set it up. The manual is not that clear however on how you can use it for other uses. I found this YouTube video which explained how.

Thanks for the info. I have had my eye on the Mixface for some time. I own the SL88 Studio. However, your's is one of the more favoralble reviews I have read. Others have not been so positive. If I had read this a month ago, you might have convinced me.
I got the Nano years ago but only recently have gotten use out of it. It is not "plug and play". Drivers, control software and DAW configuration is critical to its operation.
I have now found users reviews on the Sparrow 3x100mm MIDI controller which make be feel better about the order. Time will tell.
Looking good Dan. Certainly adds some versatility.

We need BIAB to support a MIDI control surface so we can use automation in track volume and panning. It’s the next logical step if you want to stay in BIAB longer before going to a DAW.

Yes, this has often been requested and would introduce significant practicality to the program. Hopefully one day(?)
