I was trying to help Moshe13us by trying to look at an on-line M-Audio's manual. I clicked on a site that had said manual, don't ask I forgot which one, and I immediately was greeted with a ransom message. I quickly shut off my computer. I just finish completely thorough scans with rKill, adwcleaner, defender, and anti-malwarebytes. It took many hours and everything came up clean, at least so far. I just thought that I would warn everyone.
Apparently a good site got infected. You can be as careful as you can and still get bad things happening to your computer.
Note that I do have a cloned backup in case I need it.

Mario,
Did you get a warning from Malwarebytes? Are you current with them?

Mario,
Did you get a warning from Malwarebytes? Are you current with them?
Regards,
Bob I have the latest paid version of Malwarebytes. I shut my system down as soon as I saw it was ransomware so there may have been a warning but I didn't see it. Maybe the ransomware got pass it? Or maybe there was a warning behind the ransomware so I couldn't see it? I don't know.

I got it on Matt's recommendation (I think) and have been happy with it ever since. Updating it now though. Thanks for the heads-up. Regards, Bob

I too use Malwarebytes on my personal computer at home - it's just my personal opinion specifically, but I find that even the free version of it does a really great job as an extra layer of protection against threats that slip past Windows Defender. My friend who went to school for computer engineering/sciences recommended it to me, and I never went back. Granted, I'm usually only going to the same few sites on my personal computer and don't really venture too far out on the web. I suppose I have an "online" routine in my personal life ahha. I spend a lot of my free time in google docs writing and then drawing in my art programs.
Cheers, Ember

I could have been one recommending it: I’ve used the paid version for years to supplement Windows Defender.

I have been pretty happy with Norton 360 Internet Security (Everything package.) It will flat out block a suspicious site or redirect in a nanosecond. To me, it's a beast. Still, like Ember, I tend to visit the same sites all the time--so unless PG Music has a ransomware scam going I am probably safe, just strumming the guitar and trying not to work too hard. Also, I keep the VPN on all the time. I am totally OCD about stuff like this and don't trust much.

I also use Norton 360 Internet Security on multiple devices. Never had an issue with security, but it has provided plenty of warnings about potential scams etc.

Maybe the ransomware got pass it? Or maybe there was a warning behind the ransomware so I couldn't see it? I don't know. It's possible that it was just a fake, hoping that someone will just pay up without thinking/checking/whatever. They only have to get a relative few.

Another Norton 360 / Malwarebytes user here. I've tried using Windows Defender several times in the past but have always been hit with malware and viruses with Defender. I admit, I tend to go into some of the corners of the internet searching for midi files...many international sites and such. Norton 360 and Malwarebytes has never let me down. Defender...not so much.

It could have been fake or a zero-day attack.
It can take a day for Malware, Norton, and others to recognize a new threat.
You definitely did the right thing, and bravo for having a clone backup.
And thanks for the heads-up.

Billy Yep, exactly. I guess that's the price we have to pay.

I agree with others, it was most likely an attempt to trick you into clicking something malicious, or call with a CC. Being a part of an MSP team, the team sees these quite a bit from various offices we monitor. Most often a phishing attempt, trying to get you to click. And usually a Ransomware will encrypt the machine (including the browser function) and contact you in some other manner. Especially attempts at businesses, they know how to get a hold of you without giving your IT team a chance to track which IPs you are asked to visit. That would leave a trail. They are malicious, but not dumb. /Moshe13us made me smile

I am deeply sorry that I was unwittingly the cause of this problem. I hope that everything will be back in order. Mo. YOU were NOT the cause of it. When someone asks for help and I am not familiar with what they have I look up the manual to see where I can help. I have done this many times. I think the site got infected. I am back to normal, or well as normal as I can be

I agree with others, it was most likely an attempt to trick you into clicking something malicious, or call with a CC. Indeed. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a “PROTECTED BY ALARM” sticker than to actually install an alarm system.
