I've been reading the multi-client capable thread with a certain bewilderment, mostly I guess because I'm much more a Linux person than a Windows person and the environments can sometimes be quite different.
Typically on Linux, I'd have the Jack Audio Connection kit running with a bunch of the shims for ALSA and PulseAudio (Linux is just as arcane as Windows where drivers are concerned), and I'd patch my applications through jack. As a consequence, I don't need multi-client drivers ... I believe I can just run something like MixBus and use just it as a mixer. I've just tried a quick set-up with a demo MixBus32C and it looks like it should work OK. In practice, as I have a Ui24R real mixer, I actually don't work that way, I use the Ui24R itself.
The question then is, is there really no way to do that on Windows?
Are you really reliant on drivers for I/O devices to offer the multiple-client working?
I do know that Jack is now available on Windows, but I know nothing of whether and/or how well it works. It can be a bit quirky even on Linux, so I'm very wary of commending it.
So: Are there other ways to handle multiple clients on Windows than being beholden to I/O manufacturers' drivers, and if so, how?
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.

I am likewise bewildered by the other thread, but I would reframe your question slightly. You can do what you want with vendor-specific drivers in Windows, and for most users I do not see a need to have more than one program running with a driver that permits low latency (the program doing the recording).

As far as i’m aware, if a studio wants certified MC capability that works well in win then a sound device with Drivers that provide the feature needs to be purchased by a user.
Which probably explains why many bigger Studios buy rme. Which has had MC for many years apparently.
(see gearspace.com for users that use RME/threads why they like it. My budget doesnt run to such.)
At the budget level i believe behringer has MC , but i havent been able to assess whether MC
Is in every product. Eg the usb mixers etc.

Dont shoot the messenger please.. Like you i dont need a MC feature to do my songs…although my audient seems to be MC capable….i normally do one thing at a time….
Maybe ask jeff or other users why they like MC sooo much…
From my digging apparently many daw users also might be running at the same time streaming, you tube and other apps for example/concurrently.
Please read up on the sycon driver that has the MC feature…the link is upthread in my reply to mike.
Regarding the MC topic maybe jeff can jump in as to why he likes/uses it….and its nuances.

Gordon...i forgot to mention. As your linux have you ever tried the ardour.org multitrack ? Its looking nice. If i could use a baby linux distro with a very very small footprint that ran bb/rb/reaper fluidly i would be very interested. I look at many linux distros that are BIG. Frankly it amazes me that more pg users arent trying out the highly regarded ssl 2 , motu M Series , and audient series usb audio interfaces. For example the audient id range, while being not as cheap as others DOES contain the mic preamps used in the hi end asp audio mixers used by high end studios all over the world and is getting lots of nice reviews. Also as you are in hampshire (i’m english born)..let me say its nice to see a uk company doing well and innovating. The asp is a thing of beauty. Tres yummy. I’m curious to see if more big audio mixer companies get into the usb/thunderbolt market. Hi JOM, BiaB is not an ideal match to Linux, substantially because PGM use Windows Media Player to play the .wma files and WMP is not well supported on Linux. A couple of consequences of that are that BiaB won't play demo songs and all the RealTracks need to be .WAV files. One can expand the .wma files to .wav, but the UltraPAK then uses approaching 2TB of disc space. Expanding the .wma files does not, of course, make the .wav files audiophile quality. There seem also to be a few dialogs that won't open, though nothing that's caused too much frustration for me (YMMV). Pipeline was very helpful. The Linux distribution I use for audio stuff is AVLinux, which is very well crafted for audio use, but it isn't small ... it's around 4GB. AV Linux MX Edition. There are some very lightweight Linuxes around, but most are not expressly built for AV use. I quite often use ITX boards for small systems. They tend to be quite good and relatively low energy consumption. I'm also aware of the LattePanda boards that are tiny physical footprint Win10 PCs. They'll run Ubuntu Linux, at least, probably most Linuxes. These days, Linux runs on nearly everything, where Windows increasingly does not. Ardour is very well respected. I haven't personally used it per-se for anything much as I have both Harrison MixBus (which is Ardour based and Harrison contribute to Ardour development) and Reaper, both of which are now Linux native.

So: Are there other ways to handle multiple clients on Windows than being beholden to I/O manufacturers' drivers, and if so, how? Pretty sure the answer is No. Plenty of Server solutions, however. If you focus on what you are trying to accomplish instead of how you think it should be done, the problem can be solved. Same goes for the Mac. Unfortunately, Blackhole is not available fore Windows.
