Hello:

I am using BIAB 2022, build 922.
I have not been able to get BIAB to create an accurate Midi File when I use F5 to mute one instrument at the beginning of the song and then unmute it later.

I ran tests using random styles, SW, EV 4/4, 3/4/ 12/8 --and all of the midi files create a file where CC7 (Volume) is set to Zero at the beginning of the track that is muted and then CC7 stays at zero even when the instrument is unmuted. It is very easy to fix in my DAW (Cakewalk), but seems like BIAB should create an accurate file to begin with.

I did most tests using BIAB files that had all RTs with notation, but I did try one with all midi instruments and got the same result.

Also, I could not get the midi files that started as all RTs to play a final held chord (C...) The BIAB file with all Midi instruments did play a final held chord.

PG Support says is can't replicate this result, so I was wondering if anyone else can.

IF you have time, please try the following:

1) Create a song where you use F5 to mute an instrument at the beginning and then later unmute it using F5 settings.

2) End the song with a held chord

3) Use the Midi File Icon in the toolbar (see attached photo) to create a midi file and then open that midi file in your DAW.

I should also mention that I tried Drag/Drop to create midi files for the muted/unmuted track and got the same results.

For Results:

At the beginning does the midi file set CC7 to Zero on the track that was muted?
Does it stay at zero or does it rise to a reasonable level where the track should be unmuted?
Does the midi file play a last held chord?

I would appreciate hearing any results that can then be reported to PG Music.

Thanks,
John

Hello All:

I would appreciate it if someone could do the test described above.

I'm trying to determine if it's a bug in BIAB or something else.

Thanks very much for your help.

John have you been with BIAB since 2008? If so I am sure you have seen this type of analysis over the many years. It never leads to any good. crazy

Having said that, let me apologize for that glib answer. I'm sure I should have just passed on this one, since I can't really help you out. But the only thing I can contribute is my perspective. Perhaps the next guy to come along will be more helpful. grin

So I have made every attempt to do exactly what John describes. I have all the pictures and files if needed.
Quote:

1) At the beginning does the midi file set CC7 to Zero on the track that was muted?

2Does it stay at zero or does it rise to a reasonable level where the track should be unmuted?

3 Does the midi file play a last held chord?

1) Yes, Reaper shows CC7 drop to zero at the exact bar I muted via F5
2) It stays at zero for the whole song and does not go up when unmuted.
3) Yes, but only if I raise CC7 since I muted all midi tracks and all have CC7=0 across the board.

Thanks for running the test. I appreciate it.
Your results align with mine.

I would appreciate it if a couple of other BIAB users could also run the simple test described at the top of this post, and I will report the results to PG Support/Development.

Thanks very much,

John

I tried some alternate workflows to see if a workaround was available. No success. If you mute a track with F5 it stays muted in the exported midi file dispite unmuting it in BIAB. In the midi file there is no corresponding program command CC7=90 to reset the previous CC7=0.

I am calling this one Broke!

--------------------

Tried again this moring to sus out different workflows. So here is the workaround. Don't use F5 to mute midi tracks prior to taking the midi to your DAW. Rather drag and drop the midi to your DAW and edit there.

I tried it and got the identical results as you.

I also found out it doesn't matter where you mute a track or where you unmute it as once it is muted it stays muted. Note that I worked with MIDI for these tests.

Life is short so make sure you spend as much time as possible on the Internet arguing with strangers.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
