I suspect anyone who's used a MIDI keyboard to simulate the play of other instruments has a reasonable appreciation of this. perhaps curious that he omits African polyrhythms from that, but then the video would likely get overlong if he tried to cover even half of the subject.

A very interesting presentation, and impressive discussion on the Brazilian rhythmic influences in music.

Yes, definitely interesting.

I wonder also how much influence indigenous music has influenced modern Brazilian music. I think it's hard to find South American music that isn't also heavily influenced by Portugal/Spain/Africa. It's hard enough to be sure of some early Western music, never mind from areas far from Europe.

Out of curiosity, do you know how much is known of early Australian aboriginal music? My knowledge is limited to bands like Yothu Yindi, which appear to have a strong traditional influence, but then how would/could I know for sure? Again there appear to be strong polyrhythmic flavours.

Mike, thanks for sharing this fascinating video. I learned a lot.

Repinique, kora, calabash, scordatura, pandeiro, cuica, polytonal, lumatone, balafon and on and on.

I would say that musical instrument design most definately has an impact on the music played on it.

Keep these videos coming!

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Gordon,
Thanks for the message. I'm afraid I am not specifically familiar with early Australian aboriginal music. My understanding is that their musical instruments mostly consisted of clave and of course the didgeridoo. This was accompanied by song, mostly in the form of chant.
