Oh my, not our standard run of the mill Jazz/Country tracks. I even think I heard a dog barking in there.  Very out there, not sure what genre this falls into (perhaps I'm just showing my age  ). But it was well recorded. I especially like the monentary silence at various points which served to emphasize the huge dynamic range of the mix. This has a big sound in parts. Good work guys, I enjoyed the listen.

No it's not country or jazz. Not sure what to call it.
I'm really glad you guys enjoyed it. It has haunted me for a few years. The original backing tracks were done in PT11 (or possibly 10). Barry and I were in one of our writing sessions. We used a click but Barry played drums to the click and then I recorded along with his drumming. The bass was done at the same time as his drums, then I added guitars. Then we added all the 'extra' synth stuff. I wasn't satisfied with what we had ended up with but thought the song had some potential (based on just the backing tracks.)
When RB came out I replaced Barry's drums with the Grunge Realdrums, and continued to be intrigued with the piece.
When manning1 and I were chatting one day, I sent him the tracks (minus the original vocals) and he improvised all those vocals within a couple days. I was very impressed with the creativity he had displayed. So I tinkered a bit and this what we have now.
Anyhow, it has been fun, and I appreciate the feedback. The fact that it kept you listening means a lot..

cos rharv n i are prolly too close to it.
jazzmandan...yes when i first heard rharvs nice backing
my immediate aim was to do the vocs in such a way as
to leave space n not let the vocs crowd out rharvs backing etc.
but at the same time try n get the emotion across.
particularly in the last verse. a delicate balance etc.

The backing tracks are fine. It's crunchy and I like hearing some more power oriented songs here.
The problem, as I see it, are the lyrics and delivery. A song about urban devastation is fine. But not using words like "bummer" to describe living in the "PRO-jects".
It's the hood. and it is not a "bummer". A "bummer" is when your friend bogarts your joint. The lyrics need to match the wrath of the tracks. They need to sound like you really live there. This sounds like you visited the hood one day to write about it.
Rap is the music of the street because it captures the flavor and the attitude of the inner city lifestyle. It is performed by people who live it.
Your desire to do a socially conscious lyric is commendable, but it needs more realism to capture the devastation. Don't be an observer...
be a participant.
Please take this critique in good spirits. It is, only one person's immediate reaction to a new song.
I commend you both for doing something original and posting it here. We need more guys like you!

The stuff you come up with is intriguing. I listened all the way through. I don't know what else you could do with it. I'd submit this one as a theme song for a film. It would be great for movies about: 1. Race car drivers
2. Vampire movies
3. Gang wars About the only thing it wouldn't work with are love/romance movies, altho', it might if the romance was in a gang war. Just my thoughts.

Moo - I think the projects in England are a little different than here, I let manning run with lyrics/vocals. I was impressed with how he handled it. Others commented about it needing to continue with the anger building to the end, but I didn't want to mention that and influence response here.
Dan - yep, the dog is part of an 'industrial' sample in the Juno-G I configured to work into the timing. It is part of a complex sample. Good ears.

As always - extra points whenever someone submits an orginal work, and in this case double points for creativity of content, I thought the barking was great. It added to the grittiness and atmosphere that you painted.

frankly i had my doubts too bout the bummer lyric.

i dont necessarily agree that there should be anger
totally thru the song mate.
cos there are many different personalities
from tough to soft living in devastation.
am i correct in thinking you mean the last softer vocs at
2min54secs should be angrier ??
i was trying to provide a balance.
soft and hard as it were.
let me explain why.
when i was very young one of my best friends who was a toughie and always
rescuing me from "bundles" had a very soft side to him that only a few saw.
as did many other people from englands "projects".
or council estates.
it wasnt all anger and toughness/fights but many times
people kindly helping each other.
but if the last lyrics should be harder i'm quite happy to do that.
in all honesty moo ive never been an angry person ,
even when i had bad luck or situations in life.
just not my personality...i'm a happy go lucky sort.
i am what i am etc etc. lol.

Nice job guys,
I too think the lyric could be a bit more edgy to give it a "real" ghetto feel, but other than that nit-pick I think you guys are on target here.
Personally when I listen to this effort I am reminded of a Quentin Tarantino movie or maybe even a dream sequence from a South Park episode or two, and that is a good thing.

Some lyrics perfectly match the mood and emotion of the music but others do not. When I listened to the song, I didn't feel a strong sense of involvement with the words, In contrast, I was totally spellbound by the music and production. My suggestion would be to look at ways to show stronger development in the lyrics. (There seems to be a lot of "telling" in the lyrics rather than "showing and telling". There's an article HERE called Rusty's Collar that explains what I mean by that statement.)
Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion. This song has potential to really fly because there is so much about it that is incredible.
Moohead: In Australia, "bummer" has a different interpretation and it makes sense to me.

there are many ways to do a song of course.
i felt driven to a certain lyrical approach
at the time.
mebe a different lyricist/singer would
be more capable at bringing out a more
violent approach to the song.
but frankly thats not me mate.
i'm a friendly pussycat..lol.
thus mebe i'm the wrong choice for it.
i have to in the end tho be true to myself...
and my own lyrical feelings.
but if anyone has other lyric ideas lets hear them.
cos i just took one approach that i felt at the time.

Very creative, guys! Sort of a cross between "Smells like Teen Spirit" and early Pink Floyd! Having read the comments above, my thoughts are mixed. On one hand, it is easy to identify with the American cultural stereotype and expect a certain rage. But one of the identifying characteristics of true commentary is that it tends to simply make an honest statement from an individual's perspective. It is intriguing when we hear a perspective that is different than what we expected.
There is a circle of poverty, and it doesn't always end with rage. It covers the full gamut from mere disappointment to delusional grandeur to full blown living high in hopes of beating the system.. and everyting in between...and back again. So there isn't really ONE stereotype that is truer than any other.
In that sense I found it believable. On the other hand, the most colorful stories are usually the most extreme. The character in the song was tired and disappointed, but not terribly extreme... probably quite average in every way except income. He could be any of us.
But if one listens to this song expecting to hear rage, the disappointment of expecting something without getting it forces the listener into a mindset much like the one being expressed in the song. Interesting.

Hi Manning1, Please keep in mind, my above thoughts were simply my opinion. When it comes to music, there's really no such thing as right or wrong, it's all a matter of personal taste. Quote:

Again, these are just my thoughts, but I don't think the lyric necessarily calls for violence at all times. I think there's some places in there where you can use the "friendly pussycat" approach quite productively By way of analogy, when I was just typing the previous sentence, I had the image of the ocean in my mind. It started off calm and restful. Then the winds came and blew, waves started tossing, a full-on storm developed; time seemed to stop for a second and the ocean settled to begin all over again. This is how I pictured the three distinct sections (verse, prechorus, chorus/refrain?) of the arrangement. After the storm, it became calm again (new verse).
The above is just idle thinking. I think you've done an excellent job to get the song where it is. Please don't give undue weight to what is simply my personal opinion. The ideas are just my thoughts. As I said in the above post, this opus is incredible.
