Hello forum friends. Hope all is well for all of you in your various corners of the world. I write a lot of songs. Some are from a hook that hits me, some are inspired by the "bands" in BIAB (about half I'd guess), and some are deeply personal about things I feel, remember, long for, or care about. This song falls under the latter category. Since many on the forum are within a decade of me in age, one way or another, I'm sure many of you have fond memories of sharing tracks from records at a time when the music was the soundtrack of your life and probably as central to your being as anything else. I have many such memories which I cherish greatly. My daughter recently got a turntable. I went with her to the used record store in town and bought some old LPs. Listening to If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot brought me to tears, remembering how the discovery of music and the beauty of the song changed my life in my teens. There really was magic in records. You young people on the forum will have to take our word for it, but there really is "a soul in a record". Hope this brings meaning and enjoyment to you who lived the same experience through many long and beautiful nights. Take care. Greg https://youtu.be/Dszz_Q7Tx5AThe band: Ac gtr. 1181 Ac piano. 1188. (midi through NI Grandeur piano sample_ Pedal St. 2544 Bass. (midi Fretless......Orange Tree Sample.......would love to have had Jaco on this Will post the lyric later

Hi Greg ...
Just watched and listened. There's a lot of thruth in the lyric. I'm guessiung I'm 15 or so years older than you (I'm almost 76). I grew up listening to Big Band and Pop Standards (two of your favorite genres, I believe) until the very late 50s and early 60s, when Rock and Roll made its mark. American Bandstand with Dick Clark was my first exzposure to rock music of the era. I still pick up my guitar and sing some of those songs.
This is simply amazing, both in content and emotion. Your voice should be on the radio throughout the country. Should be a household name. I truly loved my listen (left you a like) and became somewhat melancholoy as I listened. More than anything, I miss the innocence of that era. I'm working on a song about that.
What I found most interesting, is your arrangement and mix with the differing bass lines throughout. But you managed it quite nicely.
There's gold in those vocal chords of yours, my friend! It's true treat you share it with us. Asa always, wishing you everything good. Di says "Hi!"
Alan

Hi, Greg. Wow! I never get used to how astonishingly good you are: writing, singing and arranging. The song has a deceptively simple arrangement, with a fantastic vocal that feels unembellished and honest, but still honey smooth. On top of that, you've got great lyrics. You start out generic with a good, but potentially plain idea: "a song on a record". The first thing you do is make it not plain by adding specific details: There's a song on a record from 1972Great setup, and it jumps right to the story. A simple addition of "sometimes" adds a bit of intriguing detail: It still plays in my mind sometimesAnd the repeat "still" and expand the idea out: And I still think of youI'll stop now before I start repeating all the lyrics. But you manage to pack so much into your lyrics, and still stay conversational. And it never feels calculated - it's got the feels - real emotional weight. Again: Wow!

Hi Greg,
What a wonderful, song you made! A very nice subject you sang of. I liked ít all, and one sentence '...that was all on a record...' stayed, while typing this post to you. You sing it so sensitively. I liked that very much; close to the mike and calmly, because it's an intimate song.
Very well done, Greg!
Hans

Greg,
"a soul in a record..."
Indeed. There is certainly "a soul" in everything you do.
This is SO damn good.
Great - lyrics, melody, arrangement, vocals!!!, mix.
I see you have new albums released! Going into my Library...

Wow! So simple and beautiful. You wrote a little gem, I love everything about this song. PS: Did you have to laugh a little when you recorded "I could find in on YouTube"? Sounds like it

I recall well all the hype about CDs, how great they were going to be. Then I heard a few and they all sounded, to my ears, inferior to vinyl. I still feel that way. So your song rings true for me. It's a great bit of nostalgia delivered so well by your wonderful singing. Now if we could just get it on vinyl! I know, too much to hope for!

Greg...sometimes, if not always, the best way to say something profound (for you and the listener) is to say it simply...embellishments complicate and confuse many times...that's why this song is so beautiful and touching...you've captured a common experience for may in our generation and in a tender simplicity expressed it so very well...I agree with every comment so far!

Enjoyed the nostalgy about music, important memories full of feelings, lifelines, reflecting our souls. Beautiful arrangement, the fretless bass works very well (even without Jaco). Excellent vocals.

I couldn't wait to listen, Greg, so I didn't read what you wrote until afterward. Before you wrote "latter" I knew what category this song fell into. You are so good at each one. You bring out such strong memories with all of their feelings and form it all into a wonderfully beautiful song. Man, music is surely one of the most important and strong ways to connect memories and emotions. You always do that so well. This anthem should be played at every reunion whether school, work, family or friends. This song will touch them all.

Greg, IMHO this is absolutely your best to date
At 76 I can really relate to this
"a soul in a record" - what outstanding lyrics
Super vocal and mix
This is very much like something John Prine would sing.
Loved it
PS - I still have almost 1000 albums

Greg, You are very passionate song writer and performer. Wonderful tune. Great vocals and that bass of OT works very well on it. A long time friend of mine, has a small label. He releases music exclusively on LPs. Just recently he gave me a whole stack of records to listen to from 70s and up Thank you for sharing. Misha.

I recall well all the hype about CDs, how great they were going to be. Then I heard a few and they all sounded, to my ears, inferior to vinyl. Well, that's a fair comment - in the rush to capitalize & make a killing MANY LPs were transferred to CD without the necessary reversal of RIAA or being specifically mastered for the format. Then again some were overly processed for the same reasons and sounded the worse for it. Things improved just in time for "the Loudness wars" to make many awful again. This song is well written, produced and mastered...well done. Your voice is wonderful, as usual. I can hear why you might want Jaco on this BUT be glad you don't - he rarely played in support of the song...too much of a lead player for that.
