Hey,
I just saw the new video trailer for the iPad.......WOW. I am salivating to get one now. I was thinking just how cool it would be to have BIAB as an app for the iPad/iTouch/iPhone. Millions of people who otherwise would never use a program like BIAB could get a teaser of how easy it is to make music using it and then might be tempted to get the full program.......How about it Peter?

Being an avid BIAB/ITouch user, the IPAD (no feminine jokes please!) is a step up from my ITouch, but it does basically the same things, in larger format...with a bit more RAM that compares favorably with my BIAB/Sonar-based Desktops. There is also an application (under $10) for the ITouch/IPad, called IRealBook with the chord changes we look for at gigs or during practice sessions...no melody or lyrics, tho. Also, the IRealBook application now has a software editing program for computers that allows for much tweaking/editing and transposing of keyes. Let me lighten your going to a gig "loaded-down", my brother...and we'll "trip the chords fantastic"... Check out http://www.irealbook.netand, if you're in the mood for some jazz videos, my website: http://www.thegigbaby.com

Gdaddy,
This is exactly what I mean when I say that this is a BIG chance for PG music to make $$$. If they had BIAB for iPad, and then got the iRealbook, they would have an easy way to make great sounding tunes, fast. While on the subway, during lunch, in the park, etc. Plus, it will be very easy for new developers to get in on this with the new apps. For example, how about an app that let's you import the chords from iRealbook directly into BIAB for iPad? A major time saver! The possibility's are endless!!

As a major US newspaper said, the iPad is light and thin, but can you go swimming with it?
What is the O/S? Is the graphics setup able to stream movies without eating all the resources? How do you put 200 megs of Realtracks on the thing? Perspective....

I won't try to speak for PG Music, but as a working software developer (iPhone apps included), I can tell you that BiaB would most likely have to have quite a rework for the iPad for three reasons that I can think of off the top of my head.
1) There is a significant difference in architecture between an Intel-based computing box and the iPad. Apple built a new A4 processor, just for the iPad, but it has to have some backward compatibility with (and similarities to) the ARM processors found in the iPhone/iPod Touch. We ported our AI technology to the iPhone, and had to make some pretty significant changes to make that happen, that had nothing to do with graphics. I imagine that our port to the iPad will go much more smoothly, but only because we already went through the pain of an iPhone port.
2) UI, part 1: the UI of BiaB would probably have to be reworked significantly to deal with the iPad's "way" of doing things, and as a usability point, to make iPad users feel that "intuitive" feel that they get from their other iPad/iPhone apps on the device. I think anything less would be a disservice to the BiaB product.
3) UI, part 2: Through their developer program, Apple controls what gets released as a product for their devices. This means that BiaB would HAVE to fit within Apple's UI (and overall application) guidelines, not an easy task, even when starting from scratch.
So, although I would like nothing better than to see BiaB on the iPad, I would imagine that it will be a while before that happens. PG, feel free to chime in if you feel that I am wrong on any of these points.

I agree it would be fantastic to have some kind of a BIAB app for the IPAD. It wouldn't have to be fancy -- I'd be happy (and probably buy an IPAD) if it just did what BIAB did 10 or 15 years ago: let you enter chords, choose from a few dozen midi styles covering the basics, and play your song (which could then be transferred to a full Windows or Mac version of BIAB for more styles, realtracks and other enhancements.) Of course, a more capable BIAB IPAD app would be even better...

Hi Eightstring,
Far from being wrong my friend! Your post is one of the best I've seen here, because I just learned a lot about this subject thanks to your post. I have no experience writing apps or programming, I just saw the end result in my mind and was hoping PG music would see the opportunity to really branch out and reach millions of people who right now have no idea what a great and easy program BIAB is. In fact, Real Tracks/Drums would not be needed, just put a decent sounding Softsynth in there and away you go. And as far as the GUI goes, BIAB had needs a major facelift in this department for a long time.
Thanks again for shedding light on this and not just bashing the idea! Ed

"...can you go swimming with it??
Well, Apple does sell waterproof headsets and mics for underwater whale "jams" ...wouldn't take much for a waterproofbox...then you could really "wail" with the whales and easily transpose into their key with the waterproof "wave-file-editor from IRealBooks.
Ooops, think I'm getting ISeaSick! I'm just a few miles from the Florida Sea Shore where the Sea Turtles are protected whilst they busy themselves laying an egg or two or three or more...like we do on a gig, without having an IRealBook for "the changes"....I guess, we'll just have to sit and wait for BIAB to make a "sea-change"...and develop IBIAB!

The little bit of info coming out about IPAD does not show any heavy hitting apps right now, biz or creative but more end user entertainment. That was a bit disappointing not to see something, but I guess it will take awhile to port over some things. Wyndham

I just don't see the big hype here... I've been using a fujitsu tablet (slate) running Windows XP professional since 2003 and have BIAB loaded and running on it perfectly... But frankly i am tired of it, and I won't buy another tablet. Instead I'd opt for a small notebook or netbook. It's OK for reading stuff off he internet when I am in the toilet or in bed or in front of the TV.... I always take it with me on trips and use Skype to call home from Mexico... but try typing long emails or do some detailed work with a mouse... and it's a hassle. I can plug in a keyboard and an external mouse and even an external monitor... but it loses its portability and compactness, and that's when i wish I had a proper notebook. On the other hand, it has a pen and I can scribble notes on a yellow pad and save it. Apple does not even offer that yet.. and no video cam either... Sorry, i don't see the killer app for it yet!

Check out the video of the features, it includes a virtual keyboard which is very easy to type on. To me, what I am concerned about is>No slot for a memory card, no ability to write on the tablet. But the rest of the features seem great. Guess we will have to wait and see how successful it is.

There IS actually an iPhone app that seems to share some design philosophies with BIAB. It's called - wait for it - Band In A Hand. :-) As all iPhone apps also will run on the iPad, you'll have a BIAB Very Lite right there. You can check it out here: www.bandinahand.combrgds ...tt

Eightstring, you're not even touching on what to me is the biggest problem and GDaddy mentioned it: A decent sounding softsynth. Biab needs a sound source it can't produce any sounds on it's own, at a minimum a GM soundbank with all 128 instruments. That's where the processing power and memory comes in. Any kind of decent acoustic sounds require samples, samples require memory and processing. The obvious thing for Apple is to put Garage Band on it but that question has been asked multiple times on forums, radio and tv tech shows etc and the answer is the IPad has nowhere near the power to run that and it's not compatible with the IPad OS so what are these guys talking about except to just get all excited about wishing for stuff? Sure it would be cool. Yeah, I know what you're thinking GDaddy. As Donald Sutherland said in Kelly's Hero's: "Don't give me those negative waves, Moriarity!". Hey, it is what it is.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
