I have used this function before so I know it worked at some point. I highlight an area then go to the audio effect I want, change the time limit to 30 seconds (even though the sound is at the beginning of the highlighted region) then press preview. It flashes a little box real fast as it calculates...then nothing. No sound. Any thoughts?

Hello Ricky,
The preview is most likely using your default audio driver selected in the Windows control panel, rather than the audio driver selected in the Band-in-a-Box settings.

Realband will do that if the track is not consolidated..

Hey Andrew. I do get some things to preview and others don't. One I can't seem to preview is the compression.

If a track is chopped up into many pieces, due to some editing (cut paste etc) some of the older plugins will only read one 'chunk', however small it may be. In RB the solution is to right click the audio display and choose 'select whole track' then go to 'Track - consolidate audio region'. It rewrites the track as one continuous chunk.
Not at all sure if this applies to BiaB, as I do all audio in RB.. but I believe they are the same effects.
Hopefully Andrew (or someone else) will be back to help shortly. Did you check to see if the device BiaB is using is the same as the one Windows defaults to? (Control Panel - Sound)

The non-realtime effects under Audio | Plugin.. work for the whole track, not the highlighted part - the preview will be from the start of the track. If that's not what the issue is, and it's not an audio driver issue as mentioned, then I'm not sure why it isn't working. Perhaps it is an issue with that specific wave file as rharv suggested - you could try using the consolidate command in RealBand...
