I didn't want to post this question over there since the instructions are pretty specific that posts should be for the listing of music only.

So the question I have is this: is Soundcloud the only way to list songs there? Reason I ask is because my music is being streamed by all the streaming services. So, couldn't I provide a link to the song at Spotify, YouTube, or another service instead?

Yes, I have a SoundCloud account, but it's full now -- of some of my old stuff, and you can't easily replace your tunes unless you're a Pro subscriber. I was for a while, but I've had to cut back on all the monthly charges that hit my checking account, and SC was one of them.

Hi Michael, yes. Whenever I post my stuff I use my SoundClick links. No problems with linking your music to a source other than Soundcloud.

Cheers,
Mike

Usually people avoid listening to something in User Showcase if it requires some kind of sign in /sign up or unsecure site etc.
I guess anything works if it is a direct link to music from legit site.

P.S. I have heard good things about Reverbnation.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I suppose the easiest would be YouTube. I usually head over to Spotify, where I have a free account. But I dunno if people have to jump through any hoops to listen to tunes if I send them a link. Guess there's one way to find out. I could always list the same tune at a couple or three different streaming services, I suppose.

Anyway, thanks. This takes a load off my mind.

I use YouTube as well. When you're in full reply mode or creating a new post, pick the 5th icon that looks like a TV screen. When you hover over it says "Enter a media tag". Then choose youtube video. All you need is the code of the youtube link, not the whole URL. You will see a youtube clickable preview screen once you post.

My test:

Hey Steve, thanks for the info. So I went over to YouTube to check out some of my tunes, and I found that comments were turned off, so I decided to find out why. Automatically uploaded song files are called "art tracks," and the comments are turned off for art tracks. I would have to create a music video with the song in order for comments to be enabled. I'm not gonna get into music video production, that's a whole nother animal that I'm not willing to tackle just yet. So I guess I'll just provide links.

If its of any help I use Box.net, as per my profile tag below.
Biggest snag is it doesn't give you a count of how many listens/downloads you've had.

That's that old song we did on the showcase several years ago. I consider myself more an engineer than a performer. So Michael, even if you do a lyric page with your song on YouTube, would the comments be blocked? I didn't know they do that. But I guess if you're leaving the YouTube link in the showcase, the comments would be there at least.

Good question, Steve. I suspect that, if I added a lyric page, the comments would get turned on because some sort of video is being posted, even if it is a still.

As Rustyspoon says - anything that requires hoop jumping will get minimal responses...and fair enough too.
Soundcloud is popular in the showcase becasue many members have accounts there and can comment in Soundcloud as well as the forum.Soundclick, Reverbnation, and a host of others work as do links to people's own web sites etc.plus the processing crush on Soundcloud, whilst significant, isn't as bad as many others. It's best to pick what is readily accessible and gives acceptable quality.

Creating a music video can be done very simply with some free and easy video generators, a quick search will delivery oodles, and the sound quality can be reasonably well managed within them. Videos get many more play when posted on social media than a link to a streamer.
Creating and uploading your own video, rather than relying on Distro etc. is a better bet...it'll take a few minutes to a few weeks but is worth it from my perspective.

ave a look at the videos currently on the 1st couple of pages of the forum...they vary in type, style & input.
Personally I'd rather PG host a server for 320 MP3s so that we would all have a reasonable understanding and expectation regarding quality...320 not great but certainly not awful. I know they are disinclined from a cost & responsibility perspective but it'd be good.

I use reverbnation for all of my uploads except the last one which is only on youtube, it's a free site. I also have an account on soundcloud but stopped using them when they started adding advertising.

The advertising on SoundClod killed it for me...
Back when I used to post songs to "User Showcase", I preferred Bandcamp
