Lady Gaga may be weird, and I don't care for the music she does, but she is a musician. I have heard her play piano and she is quite good at it.
But in today's market, it pays to either be weird, have a good booty to shake, or both. But looks and rebellion against the establishment have always been a good formula. It worked for Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles, Madonna, Fabian, and countless others.

G'day Harv, thanks mate. Just goes to show that journalists still: "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story". Actually, the folks 1000km plus north of where I live are the ones in trouble. I believe the extent of flooding in Queensland is greater in area than the state of New South Wales which is where I live. As a result there would certainly be snakes floating around, along with crocodiles in some areas (the salt water croc. is one mean critter... makes your average gator look tame) and lots of other beasties. We've desperatly needed the rain for over 2 decades but now, as usual when we finally get it, we have too much. Hi you all
Well some singers are musicians, without any doubt.
I don't quite get the significance of "razorblade" voices. Doesn't sound like it's a compliment. Or is it ? Is it said in the sense of having a "sharp" voice ? Anyway can't say that I like Liza Minelli's voice and surely not Ethel Merman's voice... Scary I don't know, but nothing that grabs my ear.
My taste mainly leans toward jazz : Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Tony Bennett (superb duos with KDLang and Diana Krall), Monica Zetterlund (with Bil Evans) and Arita Frankline's R&B. Not so long ago I discovered Blossom Dearie, a particular voice.
In a wider range, Amy Winehouse also gets my vote (not her life style though..)
Classical genre : Emma Kirby's Mozart tears the house down and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau makes a winter's journey seem like a summer ballad...

Now if you want a vocalist that's a real genius with his vocal instrument check out youtube for Bobby McFarin. Genius. His father was an opera singer, I think the first regular african-american (whatever it's called these days..) at the Met. His Mom was a singer too.
Quite the lad they raised. I read somewhere he could play a couple of tunes on the piano and auditioned to play the grand at a big hotel. They hired him and he memorized a song a day to get enough repertoire to play.
He has conducted orchestras like the London Philharmonic and the Boston Pops. A very talented guy.

I think folks are confusing 'musician' with 'instrumentalist' but the voice is an instrument. It is God-given and the ONLY God-given instrument that can be played alone, on your own, in the shower or while swimming or doing anything else.
Elvis was definitely a musician - Happy Birthday EP by the way.
Robbie Williams, OTOH, is NOT. Ever heard him play totally unplugged? The man can't hold a note as well as half the karaoke singers I know - it is all pitch correction. However, he IS an entertainer

Anyone who thinks singers in general are not musicians uses generalisations. So many great musicians were singers. And so many great singers are musicians.
Of course the root word is muse, and that goes to the greek, and who'd expect certain people to even remotely understand even the first part of logos. I guess I should put the Greek alphabet on my computer, at least I know it.
The odd thing is those guys are usually 'yank'in' someone's chain. But the other odd thing is they think they are not. And that's not cool.

FWIW, I have been playing musical instruments since the age of 2 but I have always considered my voice to be my primary instrument. I do play guitar and bass in a very simple folk / country way but only to support my voice; I am well educated and well-rounded in music theory; I am honoured to be one of the PG Beta testers; I am often visitng my local music shop for something or other (I managed to go through 3 G strings in December and I do NOT mean underwear!); I can discuss music with the best; I try to help and promote local artists; from time-to-time, I contribute to the forum here; I am co-founding a folk club in Vienna and I have been asked to manage a couple of artists; I sing when I can (last was a Traditional Irish Christmas Party before Christmas for which I put my own band together with me on vox and guitar, a flautist, a bodhran player and a bassman), whether for money or fun, and I write my own songs...
Am I a musician? I think so but I would not DARE to call myself an instrumentalist! Yet, it can be very confusing when talking to classical musicians who consider musicians to be instrumentalists. I guess it depends on your definition.
Another dictionary definition I came across stated that a musician was somebody who 'makes money from music'? That would include all the music industry execs, recording studios, management agents, even Colonel Parker! However, that also suggests that all the amateur musicians out there are not musicians at all because they do not make money from it...
Everybody must have heard this old joke before:
Q: What do you call somebody who hangs out with musicians?
A: A drummer! Boom boom!
For that matter, how do you define a songwriter?

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums.
