Citaat:

The kid does a decent job of mimicking, but I have to say that it stops at that for me - mimickry (sp?).

My favorite musicians and artists always take something of the old and make something new from it.

Agreed on the mimicking. But I don't think that is a bad thing. We all learn by copying from our idols. Then later on as we learn and grow we also develop our own way of doing things. In other words, we develop our own style. This kid is still young; he has lots and lots of time to find his own way.

As for the main question of this forumthread: Some are, some aren't.

If you play guitar you're a guitarist
If you play piano you're a pianist
If you sing you're a singer
If you play trombone you're still guessing where the notes are

If you do what you do at a certain level (if you can fret an E, D and an A on a guitar and play "Gloria"by Them: you're not a guitarist yet!) you are a musician. If you can only copy somebody else without being able to interpret the music, you're not a musician. (If you copy Shakespeare by hand, that does not make you an author)
Just my opinion...
