Citaat:
The kid does a decent job of mimicking, but I have to say that it stops at that for me - mimickry (sp?).
My favorite musicians and artists always take something of the old and make something new from it.
Agreed on the mimicking. But I don't think that is a bad thing. We all learn by copying from our idols. Then later on as we learn and grow we also develop our own way of doing things. In other words, we develop our own style. This kid is still young; he has lots and lots of time to find his own way.
As for the main question of this forumthread: Some are, some aren't.
If you play guitar you're a guitarist If you play piano you're a pianist If you sing you're a singer If you play trombone you're still guessing where the notes are
If you do what you do at a certain level (if you can fret an E, D and an A on a guitar and play "Gloria"by Them: you're not a guitarist yet!) you are a musician. If you can only copy somebody else without being able to interpret the music, you're not a musician. (If you copy Shakespeare by hand, that does not make you an author) Just my opinion...

The trombone = only instrument which always sounds like it is being played badly.

This is truer than you think...

I think I resemble... err I mean, resent that remark.
The Trombone = manually operated, hot air powered, pitch approximator.

In thinking about it, I figure anyone who has seriously worked at the skills using either a voice or a musical instrument as being a musician. Some are good musicians, others are poor musicians. On the other hand, anyone can sit down on a drum set or piano, pick up a guitar, or open their mouth and get some sounds at it. But without working at it, they really don't become musicians. Just as anyone can pick up a hammer, saw and nails, without working at it it doesn't make them a carpenter. I replaced the water heater in my house, but it doesn't make me a plumber. I painted my own house, and I did a good job, but I'm no painter. I've done some electrical repairs in my house, but it doesn't make me an electrician either. I consider myself not much more than a tinkerer at these activities. I can do some of the things a plumber, painter, or electrician can do, but I have my limits, I know my limits, and I definitely refer to the real thing when my limits are exceeded. Just when someone graduates from a "tinkerer" to a musician, carpenter, plumber or whatever else, is very hard to say. But without working at it and learning the skills required, you cannot be a musician, carpenter, electrician, plumber, painter, etc. you will not be any of these things. You don't have to be good at it either. I had a plumber come to my house once who wasn't very good at it, he botched the job, but fortunately the plumbing company sent someone else out to correct his mistakes. Now to be a professional musician is easy. To make a living playing music (that includes singing) qualifies you at that, even if you don't do it very well. Part-time pros are also easy to qualify, they make their living doing something else, but play music (or sing) for extra money. Those who play/sing at home, church, open mic nights, and other venues for no monetary compensation are amateurs, or hobbyists. And this is the grey area. Just when they graduate from being a tinkerer to a musician is not for me to say. And I guess it doesn't really matter. And I'll add, those people who slice and dice or copy and paste other people's recordings are not musicians. They are more sonic collage artists. Just as a visual collage artist can copy and paste other people's works of art to create something, they themselves are not painters. And a rap artist, is not a singer. To read and/or compose poetry is definitely an artistic skill, but it isn't being a musician. Of course all of the above is just my own personal opinion, for whatever that is worth Insights and incites by Notes ♫

My very good friend: "One more thing, you can teach technique, but you cannot teach taste. All you can do is teach a person how to listen to the music, and if they have the inborn talent, the music will come out right, if not, there is nothing you can do but train a good technician..." So true, and we have very, very unique humans that have transcended all barriers to this question! ...you can sing...or sing through your "horn"...be prepared to be impressed.... Now, my man Mel Torme...just like Steve Allen, we're also swingin' cats....at a very early age..and not so many years later... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzq8BqVnQJYballads?? The trombone and the human voice are very similar in that being non-stopped they can go off pitch very easily.
The TB isn't always played badly - just listen to Dorsey a bit.
Are singers musicians? I thought it was obvious.

Makes a Kolot of sense Glen. I just found out my 'missing' cousin Ruth Taves is on Salt Spring. I don't think she has kids. To bad she's not older she could adopt me. Runs some whacko Buddist place and ran for the Natural Party whatever that is in an election. Maybe I won't visit. On the other hand she might be loaded according to my Dad.
