Suggestions please for a 'Happy Hippy Party' for the 50th birthday party of a girlfriend of mine. There will be a number of bands but I am MC and organiser so I can pick and choose what I want and the others will have to fall in with my selection for my own band.

As far as my band will go: vox, rhythm guitar, flute, bass and percussion

My first suggestion was 'Mercedes Benz'...

I would like to include:

San Francisco
Knocking On Heaven's Door
Lemon Tree (Kingston Trio)
Puff The Magic Dragon
Four Strong Winds

I would also like to include work from the following artists: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Rolling Stones, Beatles, etc. Please bear in mind that my voie is best suited to ballads and crooning

Sam,

What about CSNY?

You can't have a 60's party without including them! Even tho they were formed in the late 60's, their music is iconic for that time frame.

I'm sure if you start playing "Teach Your Children Well", that everyone in the room will start singing along.

Crosby Stills Nash & Young? I had to think for a minute!

This is Europe though - I don't think that one really made it here as a hit

Just checked - she is more into 'British Invasion' and mainstream. Know what I mean? Rock&Roll girl with a bit of mainstream folk and country

Hi Sam,
But it is a guy's song!!
Written by Kris Kristoffson, first recorded by Roger Miller, later by KK and by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. "Bobby" was actually a girl (think "Bobbie")

Thanks for pointing that out! I actually remember a female singing it (probably Janis). Ok, I'll add it then!

Great idea, Trax! I'm sure I can find a list of the top 100 of that year and pick the ones I like

Girlfriend's birthday, you're a crooner, Elvis you love, "Follow That Dream" is on your posting,
how can you not think of singing "Angel" from the same movie, Sam -
she'll love you to death for playing it.

So many good songs to mention.

Cheers - Ian

You are really a decade out there. All the music you are talking about is more for a 60 year old. Once you hit the 1970's I was gone. Far away. No music, no TV, no contact for 10 years. Came back in 82. Don't regret it though. Made some fine moose sausage.

I said A girlfriend, Ian. That is a lovely song but a bit too personal for a 60s party for a 50th birthday. Thanks anyway

as for 'me and bobbie mcgee,' gordon lightfoot had a great rendition of that gem and i, as another male vocalist, sang it a thousand times.

my suggestion for song ideas is: http://www.tropicalglen.com/

just select a year between 1950 and 1989 and it will play the top 20 hits for that year. fond memories, sam.

A 60's Hippy party?

White room - Cream (1968)
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane (1967) (work with it: it can be done)
Satisfaction - Rolling Stones (1965)
Paint it black - Rolling Stones (1966)
Sympathy for the devil - Rolling Stones (1968)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - the Beatles (1967)
Yellow submarine - the Beatles (1969)
Suzie Q - Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968)
Down on the corner - Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)
Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)
Mr. Tambourine man - the Byrds (1965)
Like a rolling stone - Bob Dylan (1965)

...Or would you like more suggestions for an all-night show?

Most people get into music at 14 or so. My wife just turned 50. Music of 1975 to 1980 is her thing.

When I was 13 I worked all summer picking (stawberries, raspberries, currents, apples, pears..). Rode my bike to the farmer's market, 5 miles at 4 a.m. got in the back of a pick up truck, went to the farm, back to the market for 6 p.m. Two bucks some days. Just let the bike lean against the wall, no lock. Used much of the cash to buy a transistor radio that I hung from the handle bars in a nifty leather case. It cost about $100 bucks, and when you made 2 bucks a day that was expensive.

Blue on Blue, Surfin USA, but I'm more than a decade older than the 50 year old wife. She holds my arm while I walk, but won't wear that nurses uniform and play doctor. Now she's off to work and I need to plan the trip to the can with the cane...

I still remember riding home listening to tunes at the end of a sweaty day.

Hey Sam, how long do you want your hippy playlist to be? If I was asked to fill an all nighter with music from the 65's to 70's .... Oh man that isn't work, that's just fun!

Take some pride in the Brittish Invasion?...

Hee hee! Mike, she wants an all nighter! Thing is, I have to learn them all, by April 16th. And on guitar! To sing them is one thing but to sing AND play is a major learning curve. Sure there will be other bands but as MC and 'headliner', I plan to play about 25-30 numbers
