Morning folks,

I received my 2011 upgrade yesterday and I am going through the manual to learn the new features. I have a question about the new tempo/pitch stretching engine. According to the release notes:

We’ve made big improvements to the sounds of the RealTracks, so that they sound more natural over a much wider range of tempos with the élastique Pro V2 time stretching and pitch transposition engine by zplane.development. These improvements are built-in, so there’s nothing you need to do to get it working. Your existing songs will just “sound better” over a much wider range of tempos and transpositions

Which implies that the new engine is on all the time, however when I go to the realtracks settings screen I see the following option (which is disabled by default):

High Quality Tempo/Pitch Stretching (Disable on slow machines)

Is this option for something else then??

Some machines sputter and stutter under the load of the new option.

There is thus an alternative to NOT use it.

There is another thread around here about a 'test' you can run (3rd party) to evaluate your system.

I'd be cautious if my machine was running xp, had only 1 gig of memory or less, and is of the Pentium type. However some of the caveat is dependent on how much background stuff is running, and what you are loading at boot up. Some people have a bunch of apps, say 3 cameras that are being looked for, printer managers, both wired and wireless internet, virus scanners, and other software that is loading you might not be aware of.

The cautious approach is to not delete files, try the new engine, and if it causes problems to leave things as they are.

On the flip side the RealTracks sound better, and in my case I went from having a full 500 meg hard drive (and one empty one) to having a 60 percent full primary drive due to reclaimed space when I erased un-needed files. As I had all the RealTracks/Drums that meant a substantial saving, your mileage may vary.

Dave,

I believe you are correct that the new Elastique engine is 'on' all the time. The fact that the new RTs just released do not contain the +/- files indicate that. The 'High Quality...' setting is probably just an additional tweak. I've tried it and have not noticed any audible difference.

From what I can tell, the tracks will sound the same regardless of whether you choose to use the 'old' +/- files. I've noticed that generation is a little faster if using the +/- files. Seems like a major benefit of the new Elastique is a tremendous savings on disk space in that the +/- files are no longer needed.

So try all of the options first and decide what works best. Leaving the +/- files out there won't hurt a thing beside disk space. If your computer can handle the 'new' options, go for it.

FWIW, the ZPlane website recommends 2ghz CPU to use Elastique.

Hi Rachael,

Yes, it makes sense that it is 'on' all the time for the reason you state (new RT's do not have the +/- files) and also that there is an option right below the high quality tempo/pitch stretching option asking if you want to use +/- files, and by default both of these options are off. Those two options would be mutually exclusive if the 'enable high quality tempo/pitch sretching option actually turned off the new engine.

I'm sure you are correct, it is an additional tweak. I found the following in the documentation after my initial post talking about that option:
High quality tempo/pitch stretching improves the quality of tempo and pitch stretching by a small amount. You should only set this if you have a fast computer, and are not hearing stuttering sounds during playback.

I have enabled it here, so far no problems with playback (2.3 GHZ CPU)
