Gentlemen,
Thanks for checking in.
I've never had any problems with Freecorder.
It is a Firefox plug-in, and when I record from YouTube or any other source, as Don stated, it automatically senses when the audio starts.
The other day, I came across an online radio station that plays some eclectic songs I'd like to learn. I can hear the Realplayer audio but for some reason Freecorder doesn't detect it. I have a Realtek soundcard, but never came across a Record feature.
As a last resort, I do remember that Windows had a very basic recording device years ago.
