Hi
I use BIAB exclusively to make my basic backing tracks. Then to Reaper DAW
I use Melodyne to sort out the vocals. Using audio not midi
Any info regarding Melodyne please . I only paid $69 for Melodyne Essential

What about Melodyne did you have questions about?

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I use Melodyne Essential not only for re-pitching my vocal clunkers but also for creating background harmonies free of the artifacts other pitch shifting programs seem to leave behind.

Not everyone would agree with me, but I personally have found Melodyne to be the easiest pitch correction software on the market. I have pitch correction software that I don't even use because I'm pretty much in love with MelodyneI know that the essesntial version doesn't do many of the things that the version I haved does but I'm pretty sure that you can work with most monophonic music (unlike the higher versions that will let you correct individual notes in a chord) amd I thing it will probaly let you stretch and shorten time and shift events on the timeline.

I've used it to doctor audio loops and segments of real tracks from Biab. Usually just small changes in a riff, nothing dramatic

As jim mentions, you can take your base vocal, copy it and shift it all up or down by a third, and fifth, or whatever or just go in and change individual notes. It is a good way to generate harmonies

Courtesy of their 10 sec demo use of Assistant, I've learned it works with RealBand and PowerTracks in both VST and standalone. As with Keith, I think it's the easiest to use and this includes the free stuff.
A visit to Celemony's website will give you a comparison of each of their software and what you get it each.
The $69 was only until end of 2010. Now Essential is $99 unless you can find the $69 price somewhere on the net. Assistant gives you a bit more tweaking capability of the voice - but you can upgrade from Essential to Assistant.

Thanks for this info about doing harmonies in melodyne. Surely just copying and pasting the whole vocal line up or down by a third or fifth won't create the right harmonies (or is it really that simple) as I thought You could copy the vocal up a third or fifth but still you would have to change certain notes as it wouldn't sound right?

I would be grateful for any help on this,
many thanks

Musiclover, I have Melodyne Plugin and occasionally make harmonies this way. You're right, you can't just universally move the blobs. I'm a guitarist and I sit and work out appropriate harmonies and then move the blobs accordingly; it all depends on the key you're in of course. Having said that I find that artifacts kick in if I move notes more than a couple of tones with warbling/chipmunk shades creeping in. Although this can be masked within the mix, I find the method that works best for me is to work out harmonies, record them and then use Melodyne to make corrections; this way I don't have to push and pull the blobs too far so the result doesn't have any chipmunk giveaways.

There are times when using a 3rd or a static interval will not sound good. For example a piece of music that has only the 1 4 and 5 chords, and without minor keys may be very good.

Harmony devices that use Midi such as the stuff from TC-Helicon will give you a broader better result. That is because you set Band in a Box to send it a chord, which it uses to make the harmony, thus if the chord is a minor the result will be a minor harmony. Imagine if you would trying to use a harmony system with 3rds but when you sing a G the harmony would be 2 below in 3rds you'd get a E and a C. But if you were singing a G and the chord was really a C minor you should be getting a G Eb and C. With band in a Box firing off chords to the harmonizer you get much better results.

That said most hardware harmonizers (like the one I have) come with settings for singing in each key, and different parameters. I find that it more or less works, but some odd results can happen on complex songs.
