Yep, percussion has to be on channel 10. Normally, we don't record percussion to the melody channel, but when we do, we have to make sure it's set to channel 10 (as you found out). Also, you could probably have selected instrument (patch) #1 and gotten the same result. On channel 10, the instrument numbers indicate which "drum kit" you are using. If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you'll see several available drum kits.

This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
