Greetings Using PT2010 build 4, I'm having a problem trying to merge 2 MIDI tracks to a 3rd using the Merge command on the Tracks menu. On my system, the merged track is an audio file, not a MIDI file, which is what I need. I've done this before using the same menu option, I think, but today, it takes me down the path of creating an audio file by telling to I have to reroute playback through the default DXi synth (Coyote, in my case). What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.
Barry

Do you have a soft synth on the tracks either globally or individually?

No, all tracks are assigned to record/play through my attached Roland keyboard. There is an audio track though, but it is not being selected for the merge operation...

You have to use a soft synth if you want the merge result to be audio.

Check for an update for your version of the program, I believe there was a bug in the Track - Merge command at one point. http://www.pgmusic.com/support_windows_pt.htm
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

John-I don't want the result to be an audio file, I want it to be a MIDI track. I'm using the Track Merge command, which I thought is the right option. Maybe I'm mistaken?
Rharv-I was using PT2010, version 4, but have updated to 4b. Still getting the same result...
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Barry

hello,
i've reported that problem before, it is one of the three bugs the PowerTracks 2010 seems to have. Installing the "newest" patch will not solve the problem. Mind you the latest patch was released in May 2010. Here is the list of functions that do not function properly:
1 Edit > Length of midi music (I used to use this all the time. Now I can only make the notes shorter...) 2 Track > Merge (Works only for audio tracks now. No luck with midi tracks.) 3 Endless Loop (behaves strangely, the music doesn't always jump to the looping section but start looping when it gets there)
I contacted them in October 2010 but since then, and after admiting the existence of bugs, no patch was released. I've been a long time PowerTracks user but i'm considering moving into a different direction. The pace of Powertracks development is too slow, there is no longer a quick response to upcoming software problems. It seems the package Band-in-a-Box/Realband is absorbing their energy, which i understand. The support team always been very helpful.
I hope this helped to clarify the aforementioned problems.

Hi All Thanks to those who have responded.
I did a chat session with a helpful PG tech (Kent) on Friday and was advised that the merge tracks to audio option has always worked this way in PT2010. He could not explain why it had produced a midi track for me recently.
However, he did point me in the direction of another way to do this, and that is to use the Extract Channels To Tracks option under the Edit menu. In this process, you identify the MIDI channels that are to be merged, and send them to an empty track. The only problem I had was that I kept getting no output until I made sure that no channel was being extracted to the track I wanted to use as the destination for the merged tracks. In other words, I wanted to use Track 7 as my destination for Tracks 1-6; Track 1 was on Channel 1, Track 2 was on Channel 2 and so on. In the Extract dialog box, you specify the Track for each Channel, so I extracted Channels 1-6 to Track 7, and made sure that no other channels were going to Track 7 (by default, Channel 7 was going to Track 7, so I just changed it to Track 8. Once I did that, it seemed to work fine. I haven't checked the output closely, but will soon and let the board know if there were any other problems.
I hope this helps someone else.
Barry

There is a definite problem with Tracks > Merge. While RB is intended to be similar to PT, the operation of this command is different between programs. In PT, this command merges two MIDI Tracks to Audio providing a DXi/VSTi is available for use. If not, a blank Audio Track is created. In RB, this command works as expected by Merging two MIDI tracks to another MIDI track.
The Panels in both Programs are the same with tick boxes to allow effects to be incorporated. Interestingly, in RB you can also merge two AUDIO tracks with this command.
It looks as though the update for Merge > Tracks was implemented in RB only.
